Lot 6. 1897 Princeton Trophy Ball for an 11-0 Win Against the University of Vermont. After winning on their home field, the victors painted this figure-eight ball green and added the final score in white. The ball displays as ex with a couple of chips away from the score and some surface wear. The 1897 Tigers won the Big Three Championship (over Harvard and Yale) with a 25-5 record. Nineteenth century trophy balls are scarce, and this one displays very nicely.

Lot 7. 2 Vintage Photos of a 1920s Bacharach Giants Negro Leagues Player – Said to by Jimmy Shields. The Atlantic City Bacharach Giants played as an independent team and in various Negro Leagues from 1923-34. Two 2 ½” x 3 ½” sepia photos capture a player in uniform. “Bacharach Giants” is clearly visible on the front of his uniform in one photo. The player appears in a pitching pose in the second photo. He signed one photo, and the autograph appears to read “James Shields.” In 1928 and 1929, Shields pitched for the team. Both photos have scrapbook residue on the back, as well as a “Novox Print” stamp by a Washington, D.C., studio. The signed photo has a clipped lower right corner. We cannot guarantee that the player is Shields. Bacharach Giants’ photos are very scarce.

Lot 173. Ted Williams Unusual and Attractive Display. Framed to 26” x 17”, this display consists of an 8” x 10” photo of Williams surrounded by an ornate frame on a cloth background reminiscent of a jersey. Boldly and neatly stitched in red on the cloth are Williams’ facsimile autograph and his No. 9 uniform number. Impressive item!

Lot 175. Circa 1920 Tin Can Featuring Baseball Figures and Symbols. Once a container for Ball Brand sliced peaches, this can has a paper label that shows a baseball and has outlines in gold of a pitcher, catcher, batter and fielder. Otherwise, the label from the F. M. Ball & Company of San Francisco is red, white, blue and gold. It displays nicely with some edge chips and a stain away from most of the figures. The can, which is 4 ¾” tall and 4” in diameter, is lidless and has a dent at the top on the side away from the image of the baseball.

Lot 178. Cal Ripken, Jr. Collection of Publications Plus 2 Tickets for His 3,000th-Hit Game. Ripken’s record-breaking 2,131st game is covered on the front page of the Sept. 7, 1995 issue of “The Sun” of Baltimore; full newspaper, nm. The newspaper also produced a special “Stadium Extra” the day before with the headline “2131: Cal stands alone.” This page is reproduced on a limited edition metal plate, about 13 ¼” x 23”, #220 of 2131, and ex-m. The paper also produced the 1995, 96 page softcover “Cal Touches Home,” nm-m. The Orioles also provide coverage of Ripken’s consecutive-game streak in a video (VHS) titled “2131: Cal’s Moment in Time,” unused and mint, and “Cal Ripken Jr Official Commemorative,” a 104-page extensively illustrated softcover book by Stephanie Parrillo, nm. Ripken’s consecutive-game streak ended at 2,632, an event given front-page coverage in the Sept. 23-29, 1998 “Baseball Weekly,” vg+ to ex. Another key event, Ripken’s 3,000th hit, is commemorated in this collection with two tickets from the April 15, 2000 game at Minnesota and two Certificates of Authenticity designed to hold the tickets. Nm. These are actual game tickets, not commemoratives. Ripken’s career is summarized again in a July 20, 2007 “Special Cooperstown Edition” of “Baltimore Magazine,” ex. In addition, the collection includes a Hall of Fame induction gold baseball with Ripken’s and Tony Gwynn’s name and the Spring 2007 edition of “Beckett Elite” with Ripken on the cover.

Lot 179. Baseball Stamps and First Day Covers. Unused in sheet form, the stamps are 2005 Baseball Sluggers 39-cent stamps (20) from the U.S. Postal Service and circa 2007 U.S. postage 41-cent Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn stamps (9 each) from Premier Postage. The Ripken (nm-m) and Gwynn (corner crease not affect the stamps) stamps are part of an 8 ½” x 11” sheet that has images of them and career highlights. Nm-m. Two of the first day covers are Induction Day cachets from the Baseball Hall of Fame for 1996 and 2006. Jim Bunning, William Foster, Edward Hanlon and Earl Weaver were inducted in 1996. Among members of the 2006 class were Bruce Sutter and 17 Negro Leaguers, including Louis Santop, Cumberland Posey, Frank Grant and Effa Manley. Mint. Four other FDCs feature Pie Traynor and his 33-cent stamp, Legends of Baseball with a 33-cent Tris Speaker stamp, Yankee Stadium with a “silk” cachet and 1998 HoF Induction Day Z cachet with Lee MacPhail Jr. Nm-m. Lot 180. 44 Unused Rawlings Baseballs – World Series, All-Star, Gold Glove, Etc. The All-Star balls are for 1978 and 1979 (Kuhn). The 1978 ball is slightly toned, and the 1979, slightly more so. There are three Selig balls, one for the 2006 World Series and two standard OML balls. Also: two OAL Budig, four Rawlings Official Gold Glove balls, and one is a Professional Signature Series model. These baseballs are unused and nm-m in their original opened boxes. The 32 others are Rawlings team logo “Replica Baseballs,” one box for the N.L, and the other for the A.L. Mint in the original boxes. These baseballs will make fabulous hosts for player signatures. Or use them for your Little League team!
