Baseball Cards   49 Lots       »

Lot 15.  Joe Jackson March 23, 1911 M101-2 Sporting News Supplement. One of a relatively small number of cards or premiums issued during Jackson’s career, this supplement grades f-g and has a g+ to vg appearance. If you want one M101-2 as a “type,” this is the one to have! From the Ron Gabriel collection. Proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Society for American Baseball Research.
Winning Bid $763.

Lot 16.  Scarce 1910 M101-2 Sporting News Supplement of Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner. The St. Louis weekly used a Van Oeyen photo for this classic March 17, 1910 supplement. The two Hall of Fame greats faced each other in the 1909 World Series, which Pittsburgh won in seven games. Technically f-g with two small edge tears (1/4” or less), the supplement looks much better. Professionally matted and framed, it will make a superb display item. Proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Society for American Baseball Research.
Winning Bid $572.

Lot 17.  Walter Johnson and Gabby Street 1910 M101-2 Sporting News Supplement. Technically f with several small (3/8” or less) edge tears, this supplement pictures one of baseball’s greatest pitchers and his catcher. Dated Sept. 1, 1910, its appearance is far better than the grade indicates. Proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Society for American Baseball Research.
Winning Bid $225.

Lot 18.  9 1910 M101-2 Sporting News Supplements – Baker, Bender, Tinker, McGraw, Wallace. Five Hall of Famers, two teams and two other players make up this collection, which constitutes more than one-fourth of the supplements issued in 1910. The subjects of these scarce supplements are Fred Merkle (2-17), Frank Baker (9-15), John Coombs (10-13), Joe Tinker (10-20), the N.L. Champion Chicago Cubs (12-1), the World Champion Philadelphia A’s (11-24), Chief Bender (12-8), Bobby Wallace (12-21) and John McGraw (12-28). As is common with this issue, there are some minor size variations. All of the supplements are 7 13/16” to 7 7/8” wide; they vary in height from 9 11/16” to 9 7/8” tall. All appear to be as issued. Both of the team supplements grade p; they have stains and tears, and the center fold is reinforced with tape. The player supplements are much more attractive. Coombs grades g, Tinker f, and the other player supplements, f-g. All of the player premiums look considerably better than their grade. Generally, they have a vg appearance. From the Ron Gabriel collection. Proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Society for American Baseball Research, a non-profit membership organization open to all that fosters the research, preservation, and dissemination of the history and record of baseball.
Winning Bid $354.

Lot 19.  9 1909-12 M101-2 Sporting News Supplements – Alexander, Chance, Marquard, Wheat, Etc. One supplement is from 1909, one from 1912 and the seven others from 1911. The players are Frank Chance (9-2-09), Clyde Milan (2-2-11), John T. Meyer (Chief Meyers, 2-9-11), Martin O’Toole and William Kelly (10-26-11), Rube Marquard (11-9-11), John McInnis (11-16-11), Grover (Pete) Alexander (11-23-11), Fred Snodgrass (12-7-11) and Zack Wheat (1-4-12). Alexander, Chance, Snodgrass and Wheat grade p-f; Marquard, and O’Toole and Kelly, f; and Milan, Meyers and McInnis, f-g. All have one to several small edge tears, typically ¼” or less. All look better than their technical grades. The Chance supplement measures 7 7/16” x 10”. The others vary in size, which is common for this issue. All are about 7 7/8” wide, and all are within 1/16” of 9 ¾” tall, except for Wheat, which is 9 15/16”. All appear to be as issued. An attractive group for this issue. Proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Society for American Baseball Research. Nine supplements.
Winning Bid $321.

Lot 20.  1909 E92 Dockman & Sons Gum Card of Tigers HoF Manager Hughie Jennings. Whether these cards should carry the “E92” designation or be considered completely separate is open to question. In any case, they generally bring a premium over the similar E92 Nadja Caramel cards. The Jennings card grades f with strong colors and a relatively clean back.
Winning Bid $100.

Lot 21.  18 1909-11 T206 Cards Including Beckley, Evers and Joss. All of these cards show evidence of trimming, minor corner restoration or both. The grades that follow indicate the appearance of the cards absent these conditions. Most of the cards measure 1 7/16” x 2 5/8”; a plus (+) indicates that the card is slightly oversized, and an asterisk (*) indicates that it is short in at least on direction, typically 1/32” x 1/64”. The cards are Beckley+ (Polar Bear back) vg, Chase* (throwing, black cap) vg+, Crandall* (white cap) vg+, Donlin (fielding) vg-ex, Evers* (with bat, Cubs) g-vg, Gibson vg-ex, Hunter vg-ex, Joss (portrait) vg, Lennox vg-ex, Mitchell+ (Cincinnati) ex, Mullin* (throwing) vg-ex, Oakes* (Polar Bear back) vg-ex, Phillippe* vg-ex, Rucker* (throwing, Polar Bear back) ex-m, Seymour* (portrait) vg-ex, Stanage* ex, Summers ex and Wilson+ ex.
Winning Bid $332.

Lot 22.  1911 T205 Gold Border Card of Tris Speaker. This card, which is well centered and shows brilliant colors, has a solid vg+ crease-free front. The back is missing “EA” in his name and has a small spot of glue residue toward the bottom. Wonderful collector example.
Winning Bid $113.

Lot 23.  1912 T207 Brown Background Card of Walter Johnson. Attractive vg+ front with the usual light crazing in the background and a small crease and accompanying paper loss in the lower right corner beyond the brown border. The back has a ½” x ½” tape stain; all type is present and completely readable. Extremely nice collector card.
Winning Bid $163.

Lot 24.  Rare Uncut Strip of 3 1929-30 R315 Cards – Hornsby (HoF), Simmons (HoF), Benton. Type collectors and card historians, check out this vertical strip featuring two Hall of Fame members! The cards have a white background, and the player’s name and team are in a box in the lower left. “Roger”(s) Hornsby is at the top of the 43 11/32” x 15 11/16” strip, “Al” Simmons in the middle, and Laurence Benton on the bottom. The strip grades vg+ to ex. Individually, the cards grade Hornsby ex-m+, Simmons ex-m+ and Benton vg+ to ex.
