2 Scarce 1910 M101-2 Sporting News Supplements – Chief Bender, HoF Umpires.
Lot 59. 2 Scarce 1910 M101-2 Sporting News Supplements – Chief Bender, HoF Umpires. Each supplement is 1/8” short of 8” x 10”, apparently as issued. The earlier, from a Van Oeyen photo and dated March 31, pictures N.L. umpires Bill Klem and Bill Johnstone and A.L. arbiters Billy Evans and “Silk” O’Loughlin. Klem became one of the first two umpires enshrined at Cooperstown in 1953. Evans joined this elite fraternity in 1973. The premium displays as vg+ to ex. It has a number of very light creases, noticeable principally in the corners. There also is a 5/8” tear along the top edge, which has been reinforced with tape on the back. The Bender premium, dated Dec. 8, is adhered to a photo album “stick ‘em” page. It shows one vertical and one horizontal fold, one additional heavy crease and several lighter creases, and the album’s vertical glue lines show through very lightly. There is a chip to the premium in the lower left. The premium displays very decently with a strong Van Dyck image of Bender. These premiums, which turn up infrequently, will make a nice addition to a Sporting News, premium or type collection.
Winning Bid $110.
