360 W. C. MacDonald (British Consols) 1940s “Aeroplanes & Warships” Cards.

Lot 277. 360 W. C. MacDonald (British Consols) 1940s “Aeroplanes & Warships” Cards. This collection is made up of 192 airplanes and 165 ships, including the H.M.S. Skate, the H.M. Sub Perseus, the H.M.S. London, the H.M.S. Exeter and the H.M.S Hermes aircraft carrier. It appears that 53 cards constitute a set. Issued in Canada, the cards have promotional dates on the back; 30 Sept. 1943 is overwhelmingly the most prominent date, but cards also are dated March and June 1941 and March 1944. Backs of the cards are numbered from 1-53. There is at least one card for each number except #50. There are many variations. For example, some #1 cards picture the H.M.S. Eagle, while others show the Birmingham. All of the ship cards are without advertising on the front. Not so with the airplane cards, which have either Skyways tobacco or Daily Mail promotions. Printed on white stock, the backs picture playing cards and contain British Consols advertising. One card dated 31 March 1941 has a blue back. Card #53, which has a “Joker” back, is different from the others; it has a scoreboard (“Score Memo”) front. Impressive collection, interesting and unusual. These cards carry the American Card Catalog designation C166 (airplanes) and C167 (ships). Approximately 20% are nm or better, 40% are ex-m to ex-m+, 25% ex to ex+, 10% vg to vg-ex, 5% g-vg or less.
