Lot 276. 2 Quality Real-Photo 1930s Sets Featuring Actresses and Models Plus a Third Set. The key set in this collection is the 1935 R. J. Lea (Chairman Juniors) tobacco issue titled “Girls from the Shows.” The set comprises 48 tobacco-sized cards, including such stars as Ida Lupino, Kitty Carlisle, Joan Crawford, June Clyde, Alice Faye, Joan Gardner, Carole Lombard (with George Raft), Ginger Rogers (with Fred Astaire), Dorothy Dickson and Claire Trevor. The card fronts have real b&w glossy photos, more than half with the actress wearing a bikini or assuming a leggy pose. The backs provide brief biographical information. Approximately half of this set is ex-m or better, one-quarter is ex to ex-m and one-quarter is vg to vg-ex. Ardath is the source of the second set, “Real Photographs, Series Twelve.” The set is composed of 54 cards that are about 2 ¾” x 3” and features Veronica Rose, Ann Sheridan, Joan Blondell, Marie Wilson, Olivia De Havilland, Betty Grable, Ellen Drew and various other British and American actresses of the era. Overwhelmingly, bathing suits are the preferred attire. Ex-m to nm overall. The third set, “Famous Film Stars” from R. & J. Hill in 1938, includes head and shoulders portraits of 38 actresses and two actors. June Clyde, Ann Dvorak, Deanna Durbin and Betty Grable are among the U.S. and British stars. The backs of the second and third sets are descriptive. Overall ex-m+. There are 16 additional real-photo cards from various sets, including several “Modern Beauties” series, 1939 Carreras “Glamour Girls and Stage and Films” and “Film and Stage Beauties” and Ardath “Photocards” and “Real Photographs.” Doreen Stapleton, Marie Wilson, Lola Lane, Edie Adams and Margaret Sullivan are among those pictured. They grade nm to nm+ 2 cards, ex to ex-m 7, vg to vg-ex 5, g 1, p-f 1. The “Girls from the Shows” set alone books for about $100.
