Lot 274. 80+ Actor Cards, Primarily 1930s – Cooper, Laurel and Hardy, Will Rogers, Etc. This collection of British cigarette cards, all different, includes Fred Astaire (6 cards), Lionel Barrymore, Wallace Beery (2), William Boyd (“Hoppy”), George Brent (4), Clive Brook, Syd Chaplin, Maurice Chevalier (2), Ronald Colman (2), Gary Cooper (5), Jackie Cooper (2), Richard Dix, Jimmy Durante (2), Douglas Fairbanks (4), Henry Fonda, John Gilbert, Sir Cedric Hardwicke (4), William Holden, Leslie Howard (4), Allan Jones (2), Rod La Rocque, Laurel and Hardy (2), Paul Lukas, Percy Marmont, the Marx Brothers, Raymond Massey, Ray Milland, Paul Muni (3), Sir Laurence Olivier (2), Dick Powell (2), William Powell, George Raft (2), Will Rogers, Mickey Rooney, Randolph Scott, Jimmy Stewart, Robert Taylor (3), Franchet Tone (3), Spencer Tracy (3), Victor Varconi, Conrad Veidt, Warren William and Robert Young. Sixty are in color. Most are the standard, smaller tobacco card issue, but some are larger. Slightly fewer than one-half show the actor with an actress or another actor, and many of the photos are scenes from movies. Sets represented include: Ardath 1934 (State Express) “British Born Film Stars,” 1935 “Film, Stage and Radio Stars” and 1936 “Who Is This?” Carreras 1934“Film Stars.” Gallaher 1934 “Champions of Screen & Stage,” 1935 “Stars of Screen & Stage,” “Film Partners,” “Famous Film Scenes, ” “Shots from Famous Films” and “Portraits of Famous Stars,” 1936 “Film Episodes” and 1939 “My Favourite Part,” Phillips 1934 “Film Stars” and “Shots from the Films,” 1938 “Characters Come to Life” and 1939 “Famous Love Scenes.” Player 1934, 1938 “Film Stars” Series 1-3. Walker’s (Tatley’s) 1936 “Film Stars.” Wills 1928 and 1931 “Cinema Stars” Series 2 and 3, and 1934 “Famous Film Stars.” A. M. Wix 1937 “Film Favourites” and 1940 (Max) “Cinema Cavalcade,” both sizes. About 55% of the cards are ex or better. The remaining 45% are vg-ex or less.
