Lot 272. 7 Mostly 1930s Card Sets – “Napoleon,” “Crystal Palace,” “Believe It or Not,” Etc. These sets span 1916-40. The tobacco-sized cards have color fronts and descriptive backs unless otherwise noted: 1. 1916 Player “Napoleon” set of 25. The set traces his rise and fall. Ex. 2. 1934 Carreras “Believe It or Not” set of 50. These cards are 1 5/8” x 2 ¾”. Ex to ex-m+. 3. 1937 Wills “Crystal Palace Souvenir Cards,” set of 40 (varnished), b&w fronts. Desirable set. 23 of the cards are nm or better, 12 are ex-m to ex-m+, 1 is ex, 3 are vg-ex and 1 is vg. 4. 1938 Player “Air Raid Precautions” set of 50. Includes a number of military-related cards. Ex+ to ex-m+. 5. 1939 Player “Cycling” set of 50. Outstanding artwork characterizes this set, which follows the development of the bicycle from the early 1800s. Vg to vg-ex overall. 6. 1940 Murray “The Story of Ships” set of 50. Great artwork of ships from 1500 B.C. to 1930s submarines. Includes “The Santa Maria,” “The Golden Hind,” “The Turtle,” the “Merrimac and Monitor” and the “H.M.S. Hood” and the “H.M.S. Queen Mary.” Nm to nm-m overall. 8. 1940 Hill “Views of Interest” (Canada) set of 48. Geography and history lessons in these 2 ½” x 3” photographic cards with dramatic colorized images from across Canada and fairly detailed descriptions on the back. About one-half of the set is ex or better. The vast majority of these cards are ex-m or better. The remaining cards are typically vg-ex. Accompanying the cards is a Will’s “Cigarette Picture-Card Album.” It once held the Player’s “Cycling” cards in place in a manner similar to a photo album. “Cycling” is written on the cover of the otherwise vg-ex album.
