Lot 217. 7 Complete Issues of The Police Gazette with Significant Baseball Content. Six issues are from the 1920s, when the weekly was known as The National Police Gazette, and one is from 1931. These tabloids, printed on quality paper, appeal to sports and non-sport collectors alike. Each has 16 or more 11” x 15 ½” pages, with many devoted to pictures of athletes, actresses or other celebrities. For each issue, we’ve listed the primary baseball content (full page unless otherwise noted) plus other notable entries: 1. June 19, 1920. “Pitching Stars of the A.L.,” including Ruth, Walter Johnson. Man-O’-War photo. Two pages of Mack Sennett bathing beauties. 2. July 17, 1920. “Cleveland ‘Indians’ Setting Great Pace in the A.L. Pennant Race.” Also, photos of Man-O’-War, Rogers Hornsby and Warren G. Harding, and two pages on track and field. 3. Aug. 28, 1920. “Brooklyn’s Efficient Representatives in Pennant Race,” including Wheat. Two pages on the Olympics, including two photos of Duke Kahanamoku, one of Irene Guest, and other swimmers. Full pages devoted to Wimbledon, including Tilden, and the Tommy Burns-Joe Beckett fight. More bathing beauties. 4. Jan. 22, 1921. Quarter-page photo of Cobb signing for the 1921 season for $30,000. Photo of Celtics of New York, U.S. champion basketball team. Three-fourths page on the Frank Moran-Joe Beckett fight. One-half page on Joe Lynch, bantamweight champion. Silent film actress Mary Thurman is on the front page. 5. April 23, 1921. “Diamond Stars, Old and New, in the Yankees’ Line-Up,” including Ruth, Huggins and Schang. Photo of Ruth golfing with Hoyt, others, and a photo of golfer Joyce Wethered. Full page on welterweight boxing champion Jack Britton; also, photos of Carpentier, Tendler. 6. Oct. 30, 1926. Two-page spread on the World Series involving the Cardinals and Yankees, including Ruth, Alexander, Hornsby. Two-thirds page with golfers Glenna Collett, Virginia Wilson. Photos of Red Grange (non-sport), Clara Bow, pro and college football. 7. Nov. 7, 1931. Two-page spread on the Cardinals-Athletics World Series including Mack, Pepper Martin, Cochrane, Foxx, others. Full page on the Sharkey-Carnera fight. Photos of golfer Helen Hicks, actress Lilyan Tashman on the front cover. These seven issues are very clean and average ex-m. Three issues were folded horizontally. There are occasional border or corner creases and a couple of tiny tears and stains.
