Lot 89. 3 1896 Whitehead & Hoag Baseball Position Pins – Red Shirts, Gold Backgrounds. High-end examples of the 1 ¼” versions of the Captain, Catcher and First Base(man). Shown against gold backgrounds, the players have red shirts and socks and white hats, pants, belts and shoes. The colors on all three pins are bold and bright. The Captain has two light horizontal scratches. The paper on the back is bright and unstained, advertising Lininger & Metcalf Co. of Omaha wholesale agricultural implements. The First Base pin promotes the Harrisburg Athletic Club on the front. The pin is nm-m with one tiny black spot, which is under the celluloid, near the player’s right knee; the paper back is present with some stains. The Catcher, nm-m with a minor bump, has advertising for Heydt’s Yankee Bread. The paper back has stains at the margins. Three outstanding 19th century pins – some of the finest examples available!
