Lot 222. 34 Cleveland Indians Wire and Newspaper Photos, Primarily from the 1940-60s. Seven photos are from the 1940s, 15 from the 1950s, seven from the 1960s, four from the 1970s and one from 1980s. Subjects of the photos, many in multiple photos, include Lou Boudreau, Bill McKechnie, Mel Harder, Joe Gordon, Gene Bearden, Bob Feller, Bill Veeck, Al Lopez, Early Wynn, Al Rosen, Jim Hegan, Herb Score, Mudcat Grant, Pedro Gonzalez, Vic Wertz, Vic Power, Gabe Paul, Al Dark, Frank Robinson, Ken Harrelson and Joe Charboneau. Among the highlights are: A photo of Bearden receiving congratulations after winning Game 3 of the 1948 World Series. Veeck meeting with Baseball Commissioner Happy Chandler. Boudreau receiving the Sports Magazine award as Outstanding Athlete of 1948. Score receiving an award as the top minor league player, and recovering from various injuries. Grant being sued by his former fiancé for breach of promise. Pedro Gonzalez, in several photos related to his suspension for swinging a bat at Larry Sherry. Robinson, upon his hiring as the first African-American major league manager in 1971, and his firing in 1977. Also, Robinson meeting with Jackie Robinson’s wife. Harrelson at a game as he recovers from an injury. And Charboneau as A.L. Rookie of the Year. The photos are from AP, UPI, International News, INP, Acme, the Central Press Association and the Cleveland Press. Almost all have captions; a half-dozen have only names written or typed on the back, and one has no identification. Sizes range from 6” x 8” to 8” x 10”; most are 7” x 9” or larger. These photos average ex to ex-m. Some have creases, which are almost always away from the central image area, which has an ex or better appearance. Two of the 1940s photos and one from the 1950s show some “alligatoring.” This is a quality, desirable collection of Cleveland photos.
