Schalk, Waner, Roush, Ruffing, Sparma Signed “Home of Cooperstown” Baseball.

Lot 166. Schalk, Waner, Roush, Ruffing, Sparma Signed “Home of Cooperstown” Baseball. This ball creates a number of possibilities for display. For example, Joe Sparma alone signed the west panel, and with just a little finesse, his signature alone can be displayed. Sparma is a tough, deceased member of the 1968 World Champion Detroit Tigers. He won the game that clinched the A.L. pennant for Detroit. In 1986, a heart attack claimed his life at the age of 44. His signature is ex 5 to ex-m 6. Hall of Fame center fielder Edd J Roush has the sweet spot to himself. Ex-m 6 to nm 7. The south panel displays well with Hall of Fame members Lloyd Waner and Ray Schalk, along with H. C. Buckingham. Schalk’s signature on any ball is very uncommon, and on this ball, it displays as nm-m 8, the strongest of the HoF signatures. The Waner autograph is a 6-7. The ball is signed also by Pat Dobson, Denny McLain and Earl Wilson on the north panel and Red Ruffing and Marty McHale on the east. There is a stray “v” on the Ruffing signature; otherwise, these five signatures are ex 5 to mint 9, with the McLain and Wilson autographs especially strong. The ball is lightly to moderately toned and soiled (small brown spots) in places. Interesting ball with many possibilities! Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
