The autographs are 9s and 10s, rating less than 10 only because of a slightly dark background in some cases. Bobby Morrow, “Sportsman of the Year” for 1956, signed the covers of the July 2, 1956 and Jan. 7, 1957 issues. He shares the 1956 cover with Dave Sime, who also signed. Already an AAU champion, Morrow won three gold medals at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne: 100 meters, 200 meters and 100-meter relay. Sime took the 100-meter silver medal in the 1960 Olympics. Tom Courtney captured gold medals in the 800-meter individual competition and 400-meter relay at Melbourne, and he signed the covers of the Dec. 10, 1956 (vg) and May 2, 1955 issues. Two shotput competitors are featured: Parry O’Brien, March 21, 1955, and Dallas Long, April 25, 1960. O’Brien, who revolutionized the shot put, earned gold at the 1952 and 1956 Olympics. He was inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. He passed away in 2007. Long won Olympic bronze in 1960 and then captured the gold medal at the 1964 Olympics. He set a record for the shot put in 1964. Both Long and O’Brien are in the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame. Also: Phil Reavis, Feb. 24, 1958, nm-m signature. He won the NCAA high jump in 1956 and the AAU indoor title in 1957. Glenn Davis, June 27, 1960. He won three Olympics gold medals, in the 400-meter hurdles in 1956 and 1960 and in the 400-meter relay in 1960. Jim Beatty, July 11, 1960, was the first runner to cover a mile indoors in less than four minutes. He held various AAU titles. Joe Uelses, Feb. 26, 1962. Among the first to use a fiberglass pole, he was the first to vault 16 feet. George M. Frenn, July 6, 1970, the AAU hammer champion 1970-71. He died in 2006. Sebastian Coe, Aug. 11, 1980. A middle distance runner, Coe earned the 1500-meter gold medal at the 1980 and 1984 Olympics. He is now head of the Organizing Committee for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
