Lot 229.  12 Sports Illustrated, Mostly 1950s-60s, Signed by Track and Field Stars. Complete vg-ex to ex+ issues with mailing labels unless otherwise noted. The autographs are 9s and 10s, rating less than 10 only because of a slightly dark background in some cases. Bobby Morrow, “Sportsman of the Year” for 1956, signed the covers of the July 2, 1956 and Jan. 7, 1957 issues. He shares the 1956 cover with Dave Sime, who also signed. Already an AAU champion, Morrow won three gold medals at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne: 100 meters, 200 meters and 100-meter relay. Sime took the 100-meter silver medal in the 1960 Olympics. Tom Courtney captured gold medals in the 800-meter individual competition and 400-meter relay at Melbourne, and he signed the covers of the Dec. 10, 1956 (vg) and May 2, 1955 issues. Two shotput competitors are featured: Parry O’Brien, March 21, 1955, and Dallas Long, April 25, 1960. O’Brien, who revolutionized the shot put, earned gold at the 1952 and 1956 Olympics. He was inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. He passed away in 2007. Long won Olympic bronze in 1960 and then captured the gold medal at the 1964 Olympics. He set a record for the shot put in 1964. Both Long and O’Brien are in the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame. Also: Phil Reavis, Feb. 24, 1958, nm-m signature. He won the NCAA high jump in 1956 and the AAU indoor title in 1957. Glenn Davis, June 27, 1960. He won three Olympics gold medals, in the 400-meter hurdles in 1956 and 1960 and in the 400-meter relay in 1960. Jim Beatty, July 11, 1960, was the first runner to cover a mile indoors in less than four minutes. He held various AAU titles. Joe Uelses, Feb. 26, 1962. Among the first to use a fiberglass pole, he was the first to vault 16 feet. George M. Frenn, July 6, 1970, the AAU hammer champion 1970-71. He died in 2006. Sebastian Coe, Aug. 11, 1980. A middle distance runner, Coe earned the 1500-meter gold medal at the 1980 and 1984 Olympics. He is now head of the Organizing Committee for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Lot 230.  8 Sports Illustrated Autographed by Olympic Skaters, Skiers and Swimmers. These complete issues average vg- ex to ex with mailing labels. The signatures are 10s, nicely placed to stand out boldly on the magazine covers. Carol Heiss, on the Feb. 7, 1955 cover, represents the world of Olympic skating. Heiss dominated U.S. figure skating 1956-60. She held the world championship during these five years, the North American championship in 1957 and 1958, and the U.S. championship 1957-60. She settled for the silver medal at the 1956 Olympics and then captured the gold in 1960. Jill Kinmont Boothe, Jan. 31, 1955, was considered to have a shot at a medal at the 1956 Olympics until she was paralyzed from the neck down in a skiing accident the week she appeared on the SI cover. At that time, she was the U.S. slalom champion. Subsequently she became a teacher and painter, and her life is the subject of the 1975 movie “The Other Side of the Mountain.” Ralph Miller, Feb. 6, 1956. In 1955, he set the speed skiing record of 109.14 mph. Al Wiggins, April 2, 1956, won five AAU national titles and various swimming championships at Ohio State 1955-57. He set world records in the 100-yard and 100-meter butterfly. Jeanne Stunyo, Aug. 6, 1956, earned a silver medal on the three-meter springboard at the 1956 Olympics. Chris von Saltza was a champion swimmer when she appeared on the cover of the July 21, 1958 SI at the age of 14. Two years later in Melbourne, she won three Olympics gold medals: 400-meter freestyle, 4 x 100-meter freestyle and 4 x 100-meter medley) and silver (100-meter freestyle). She was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1966. Becky Collins, July 13, 1959, one of few pre-college athletes to appear on an SI cover. Carin Cone, April 18, 1960, set seven world records in the backstroke. She captured a silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke at the Olympics in 1956 and two gold medals in the Pan American Games in 1959. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 231.  1979 Michigan Sports HoF Program Signed by Orlick, Morrall, Newhouser, Etc. In 1979, Warren Orlick and Earl Morrall were inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame. Both signed the cover of the program, and their signatures grade 9-10. Known as “Mr. Rules,” Orlick was president of the Professional Golfers Association 1971-72. He passed away in 2003. An All-American at Michigan State in 1955, Morrall had a pro football career that spanned 21 seasons. Other football players who signed the program, primarily by their photos, are Joe Schmidt, Ron Kramer and Vince Banonis. Mrs. Ace Gutowksy also signed; her late husband, the Detroit Lions fullback, also was a 1979 HoF inductee. Another golfer in the HoF, Chuck Kocsis, also signed. Baseball is represented by autographs of Chas Gehringer, Hal Newhouser and Joe Garagiola. Basketball contributors who signed are Jake Mazer, Bob Calihan, Cincy Sachs and Lofton Greene. Lot 232.  1909 Wills “Billiards” Set of 50 with Instruction by John Roberts. The front of each card shows a billiard table with a challenging shot. On the back, Roberts provides instruction on how to make the shot. Roberts was a top English billiards player in the late 1800s. The cards grade Nm-m: 4 cards. Nm+: 3. Nm: 2. Ex-m+ 11. Ex-m: 10. Ex+: 6. Ex: 10. Vg-ex: 4.

Lot 233.  1920s W542 Uncut Strip Set of 10 “Sports Drawings” – 2 Baseball, 2 Boxing, Etc. Similar to the W552 “Baseball Position Drawings,” these cards represent a wide range of sports. The blank-backed strip is 2 9/16” x 14 ½”. Overall, the strip is ex, free of creases except for a tiny crease in the lower right corner and some wear at all four corners. It is cut on a slight diagonal. The cards are #1 Training, 2 Cricket, 3 Tennis, 4 Boxing, 5 Athlete, 6 Roller Skating, 7 Ice Skating, 8 Hockey, 9 Catcher and 10 Pitcher. This is only the second time in 30+ years of collecting that we have seen a complete strip, and this example is very nice.

Lot 234.  1935 Odgen’s “How to Swim” Set of 50 Cards with 40 PSA NM-MT 8 or Better. High-quality set with a swimming stroke demonstrated in color on the front and described in text on the back. Only five cards are less than NM 7, and only one is less than EX 5. Twenty-one cards are MINT 9, seven NM-MT+ 8.5, 11 NM-MT 8, two NM+ 7.5, two NM 7, one NM 7 (MK), one EX-MT+ 6.5, two EX+ 5.5, one EX 5 (MK) and one VG-EX+ 4.5.

Lot 235.  PSA-Graded 1937 High-Quality Set of 50 Lambert & Butler “Keep Fit” Cards. You could buy a book on fitness, but you might have more fun with these cards. The front of each color card has three images of a man or woman demonstrating an exercise, which is described on the back. Forty-nine of the cards are at least EX-MT 6. The grades – MINT 9: 2 cards. NM-MT+ 8.5: 2 cards. NM-MT 8: 20 cards. NM+ 7.5: 4 cards. NM 7: 12 cards. EX-MT+ 6.5: 1 card. EX-MT 6: 8 cards. EX 5: 1 card.

Lot 236.  1939 Churchman Kings of Speed Set of 50. This set, which is ex-m to ex-m+ overall, consists of photos and brief biographical sketches of men who traveled at high speeds in the air, on the ground and across water, snow and ice. Flyers make up the first 10 cards, and Howard Hughes is among them. Among those who traveled fast on land were John Cobb, who reached 350 miles per hour in Utah in 1938, and Jesse Owens, star of the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.

Lot 237.  Uncommon 1955 British Automatic “Sportsman” Set of 24. These 1 1/8” x 2 1/8” color cards contain portraits of billiard players, golfers, speedway racers, soccer players, cricketers, jockeys, etc. Among the “names” are Denis Compton, Tom Finney, Trevor Bailey, Sir Gordon Richards, Don Cockell, Stirling Moss, Geoffrey Duke, Henry Cotton, Joe Davis and Rosalind and Diane Rowe. Nm+: 3 cards. Nm: 1, Ex-m+: 7. Ex-m: 10. Ex+: 2. Vg-ex: 1.
