Lot 390. Incredible Collection of 30 Washington, D.C., Area Pennants from as Early as 1921. These pennants come in four approximate sizes: Small (S), 7” x 17”. Medium (M), 9” x 24”. And large (L), ranging from about 10 ½” x 28” to 14” x 34”. Almost all have tack holes along the vertical strip at the left and at or near the tip. Grades do not consider these. Eight pennants are dated: 1. 1921, L, decorative black letters spelling “Washington” stitched on an orange field. Also, orange “DC” stitched on a black field at the left with “1921” in a black-on-orange curved banner. Beautiful, clean pennant with a frayed, clipped tip. 2. 1923 Shriner’s pennant, L, “Washington, 1923” in gold on a red field. A circle at the left presents colorful artwork of a man with a camel and the Capitol in the background. Text says “Park Your Camel with Uncle Sam’l.” Some fading in the field and light wear on the printing. Vg-ex and unsual. 3. 1925, L, similar to (1.), gold-on-orange “Washington” and “1925,” gold-on-black “DC.” Three very small holes on letters or numbers; otherwise, ex-m. Six Small dated pennants, all with an image of the Capitol in the lower left and “Washington D.C.” in the field. 4-9. 1947 and 1948 (2). Each has the date in blue on a gold banner. Field colors are black, blue and red. One ex+ with a couple of edge chips, one g-vg and one vg+. 1953, white on green, g+. 8. 1957, white on tan, p. 9. 1959, white on blue, vg-ex. Three other 1920s-40s pennants have stitched-on letters: 10. “Washington, D.C.,” M, orange letters with grey shading on black. Four edge chips; otherwise, ex-m. 11. L, style similar to (1.) and (3.) with “Washington” in blue on a red field and “DC” at the left in red on a blue background. Displays very well, clipped tip two small holes. 12. “Washington D.C.” in gold on brown, M, tip slightly clipped, ex appearance. 13. Vertical “Washington D.C.” on leather with the Capitol at the top. M, faded, rare. 14-16. “Mt. Vernon, VA.,” L, image of George Washington in the upper left and Washington’s mansion below. Blue, maroon and red f ields, one g-vg, one nm, one vg-ex with a small hole. 17. Mt. Vernon, S, white on burgundy, Martha joins the President above the mansion, ex. 18-22. Five M pennants with the Capitol at the left and “Washington D.C.” at the right. White text on fields that are purple, red and three different shades of blue. One g, two vg, one vg-ex and one ex-m. 23-24. Two M, Washington Monument, Iwo Jima, the Capitol and the Jefferson Memorial at the left and “Washington, D.C.” at the right. White on red and white on blue, g-vg. 25. “Washington, D.C.” above the Capitol with the White House to the right and the Washington Monument to the left, white on red, M, ex. 26. “Souvenir of Washington D.C.” at the right, white on red, Capitol, White House and “Washington Monument and Cherry Blossoms” at the left, somewhat faded, M, vg-ex. 27. “Washington Zoo,” L, white on red, illustrations of a lion, tiger, elephant and polar bear, vg+ to ex. 28. “National Zoological Park, Washington, D.C.,” M, panda illustration, white on green, vg. 29-31. Pennants for Santa Maria, the Franciscan Monastery Diamond Jubilee 1899-1974 and DC Metro Phase II, July 4, 1977. The six older pennants and the leather model are well worth our MB $100.
