Basketball Cards and Memorabilia   3 Lots

Lot 215.  1948 R714-27 Topps Magic Photos Card No. 5 of 5-Q Featuring George Mikan. Copyrighted in 1948, this set was actually sold in 1949. In checklists, this card, from the “Basketball Thrills” subset, is often identified simply as “DePaul 75 to 64.” The significance of the card, however, is the central figure in the mini-photo, Basketball Hall of Fame center George Mikan, NCAA Basketball Player of Year at DePaul in 1945 and 1946. Subsequently, Mikan became pro basketball’s first dominating big man, and his role in making the fledgling NBA a success earned him the name “Mr. Basketball.” The Topps card picturing Mikan is ex with a photo that shows excellent focus and contrast for this issue.
Winning Bid $185.

The sheet has three heavy horizontal creases and a couple of small tears. F-g. If the cards were cut from the sheet, Thurmond, Van Arsdale, Barry and various others would be free of creases. Otherwise, the sheet makes for a pleasing display.
Winning Bid $75.
