4 Non-Sport Periodicals, 3 Pre-1940, with Baseball Covers or Content.

Lot 321. 4 Non-Sport Periodicals, 3 Pre-1940, with Baseball Covers or Content. The earliest is a 1910 Cornell University publication titled The Widow. Devoid of significant baseball content in its 48 pages but dubbed the “Baseball Number,” it has an intriguing cover with a coed seated on a baseball and a universe of baseballs above and around her. The cover is split along the seam at the top and has several small edge tears. Its appearance is outstanding! In contrast, the Sept. 5, 1912 issue of Life has not only a baseball cover, but extensive content, much of it humorous. From 1883-1936, Life was a well illustrated humor and general interest magazine similar to Puck. Henry Luce bought it in 1936 and transformed it into the familiar photo-news magazine published weekly until 1972. Bayard Jones artwork on the cover shows a boy watching a baseball game from a tree, high above the action. The 38 inside pages contain many cartoons. G. The Aug. 1937 Fortune has an article of more than 10 pages on “Big League Baseball” illustrated with photos of DiMaggio, Dean, Frisch and Mack, and full-color paintings by Joseph W. Golinkin, including one of Yankee Stadium. Vg-ex. Ty Cobb is the subject of five-page Furman Bisher article in the June 14, 1958 Saturday Evening Post. The article is illustrated with photos of Cobb, Babe Ruth, Joe Jackson and other HoF players. G copy with a stain that affects the first 40 pages, but not the Cobb article.
