Lot 137. 8 Chicago Cubs Postcards – Wrigley Field, Spring Training, 1945 Team. Led by manager Charlie Grimm, the 1945 Cubs won their last N.L. pennant of the 20th century. Solid pitching by Hank Wyse, Hank Borowy, Paul Derringer, Ray Prim and Claude Passeau provided the foundation for Chicago’s success. Phil Cavarretta won the N.L. batting title, and Stan Hack, Andy Pafko and Bill Nicholson contributed timely hits. The real-photo card is ex-m+. One of the pre-line stadium cards shows the “Chicago Cubs Training Grounds and Catalina Island Country Club House, Catalina Island, California.” This colorful Tichnor card is vg+ with an ex appearance. The other pre-linen is “580. National League, ‘Cubs,’ Ball Park, Chicago,” from the Acmegraph Co. of Chicago. View from right field, game in progress, vg+, looks better, light stain on unused back. Another card, postmarked 1931, has characteristics of both a pre-line and linen card. It’s an aerial view with “301, Cubs Ball Park, Chicago” in the top border and “Wrigley Field, Home Grounds of the Chicago Cubs, 113804” in the bottom border. Text on the back acknowledges the “Chicago World’s Fair 1933.” Vg+ to ex. The four linen cards are: 1-2. “Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois, 61” from Chas. Levy, one postmarked 1940, vg+ to ex, and the other, unused, ex, date in pen on back. 3. “Wrigley Field, Home of the Chicago Cubs, 162,” J. O. Stoll Co., postmarked 1944, vg-ex. 4. Same image on front as the previous, “Beautiful Wrigley Field…Home of the Chicago Cubs,” image of Gabby Hartnett on the back, issued by Curteich. Vg+ to ex.
