Lot 344.  4 Early 1900s Advertising Postcards Including Gillette, Prudential Insurance. All are in color. A delightful card featuring a child with a shaving cream beard promotes the Gillette Safety Razor. The Gillette company was established in 1901. G-vg, displays better. Prudential promotes its insurance products with a dog, a little girl blowing a large bubble, a 1910 calendar – and the “Rock” on the back, vg. Another early 1900s card promotes Happy Thought Tobacco, g. Schlitz Beer is the subject of a 1948 card, g. The Gillette and Prudential cards capture the spirit of 19th century trade cards.

Lot 345.  . Early 1900s Postcard Boasting William Howard Taft as “Our Next President.” Beautiful ex-m divided-back example picturing Taft and the U.S. Capitol. Taft was elected President in 1908.

Lot 346.  21 Different Early 20th Century Postcards Featuring Sailing Ships. Wonderful little collection of pre-linen cards presenting vessels powered by the wind, including whaling ships, oyster dredging ships, cargo ships, “Old Ironsides,” the “United States,” the “Mary A. Brown” and the “H.M.S. Victory.” Four cards have undivided backs and space for writing on the front. Eleven are postmarked 1900-09. Eleven are in color, one is sepia and the others are b&w. Eight are unused. They average vg-ex. Five are ex.

Lot 347.  4 Early 1900s Color Postcards, One from Tuck, Featuring Indian Chiefs. Three of these postcards have undivided backs, and two are postmarked 1906. The card that isn’t postmarked has space for writing on the front. The pc from Tuck & Sons, which is postmarked, pictures Charging Bear and is part of Series 2171. The other Native Americans are Chief Lone Wolf, Chief Spotted Tail (Sioux) and “Wakauhi-Napa – Comes Out Holy.” The Tuck pc is g+ to vg. The others are vg, g-vg with some light extraneous writing on the front, and g+. Scarce and attractive.

Lot 348.  3 Pre-Linen Postcards Featuring German Airships, One on a Bombing Run. Ferdinand von Zeppelin developed the first airship for widespread use at the dawn of the 20th century. Another German, Johann Schutte, sought to improve upon Zeppelin’s design. Two b&w cards show Graf Zeppelin dirigibles in apparent civilian use. A color pc, which reproduces a Rudolf Schulz painting, depicts the Schutte-Lanz model, apparently on a World War I bombing mission. Germany used airships for bombing civilians and troops in WWI. One b&w postcards is ex+, and the other is vg+ to ex. The color pc is vg-ex with a light crease and minor scrapbook residue on the back.

Lot 349.  9 Early 1900s Postcards of England and the Isle of Man. All are pre-linen with divided backs. Five appear to be from the 1910s. These color cards show the zoo in Manchester, Cartwright Memorial Hall in Bradford, the Leeds Post Office and City Square, the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and the Water Wheel at Groudle Glen. One of these cards is attributed to Horrocks & Co., and another is from Valentine’s. These five cards grade vg-ex; they show corner wear and are generally free of creases. Three cards with a similar design show scenes on the Isle of Mann: Laxey Gardens, g+ to vg and possibly postmarked 1911; the Groudle Glen Water Wheel (different from the card above), g-vg; and Port Soderick, vg. A sepia card postmarked 1938 captures the South Ambulatory of Westminster Abbey, vg+ to ex. Delightful collection.

Lot 351.  Circa 1929 Tri-Fold Postcard of New York, 5 More Early 1900s Cards. The tri-fold pc opens to about 3 ½” x 16” to provide a colorful view of the New York City Skyline. Wonderful ex card from Underhill. “August 1929” is written on the back. The other cards, all color, picture: 1. Municipal and Woolworth Bldgs. Vg+ to ex. From Underhill. 2. 110th St. Elevated Curve. Shows two horse-drawn vehicles. Undivided back, two tiny front edge chips; otherwise, ex. 3. Skyline and the ship “Priscilla,” undivided back, g-vg. 4. New York and Williamsburg Bridge, 1903 J. Koehler card, undivided back, g+ to vg. 5. Brooklyn Bridge, 1908 postmark, vg.

Lot 352.  11 1930s Real-Photo Postcards of England, 4 More from the 1950s. All different. Ten of these sepia-photo postcards present 1930s scenes of Manchester, England. The eleventh shows Stamford. Valentine’s produced seven of them, and four are from the Excel Series. Among the scenes are the Cathedral, Whitworth Park, the Royal Infirmary and Albert Square (2 different). Six are ex, one vg+ to ex, one vg+, two vg and one g-vg. Two have 1937 postmarks. The 1950s cards, also real photos, show Buckingham Palace, Loch Lomand and Leigh-on-Sea. The fourth is a London composite. These average vg+. There also are two chromes, one showing Windsor. 17 postcards.
