Lot 271.  15 1922-24 Mid-Week Pictorials - Football Boxing, Olympics, Golf, Tennis Photos. Complete issues of the weekly New York Times tabloid, most with 24 pages. The Summer Olympics are the topic of two-page spreads in two 1924 issues. A related full-page photo shows Helen Wills, 1924 tennis gold medal winner. Two editions have football covers: Walter Taylor, NYU captain and Bill Mallory, Yale captain. An Army-Navy game photo occupies two pages. Boxing receives extensive coverage. There are four full pages on the upcoming Firpo-Dempsey bout and pictures of Greb, Johnny Wilson, Carpentier (full page), Leonard, Ciriqui and Willard. A 1924 issue has two pages on the U.S. Open Golf Tournament won by Cyril Walker. Elsewhere, photos capture Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen. Track and field is represented by Charles Paddock in multiple photos. The Sept. 21, 1922 issue has a rare photo of an African-American athlete, Dehart Hubbard, a broad jumper from the U. of Michigan. Other interesting figures are Roald Amundsen, discoverer of the South Pole, and Mary Pickford. Most issues are separated at the spine, and the paper is brittle with edge chips and tears. Most photos are unaffected, or only minimally affected. Some covers have pencil notations.

Lot 276.  1911 T218 Champion Athletes & Prizefighters Card of Golfer George Low. In the late 1800s, Low was one of the better golfers playing in the U.S. He was a runner-up in the 1899 U.S. Open. Vg++ to ex.

Lot 277.  Scarce 1950s “Cope’s Golfers” Reprint Set of 50. The original set, issued in 1900, is one of the most valuable (about $4000.) British sets. The reprint is seldom seen, and cards “book” at $5 each. This colorful set with outstanding artwork grades, nm to nm-m 22 cards, vg to ex 18 cards, g to g-vg 10 cards.

Lot 278.  6 U.S. Open Press Badges 1981-85, a Volvo Masters Badge, Etc. There are two badges, each a different color, for 1982 and one each for 1981 and 1983-85. Five have one or more clipped corner. Otherwise, they range from vg+ to nm. The Volvo Masters is ex-m and undated. Also, a 1987 Reebok enamel pin, mint; a 1991 2 ½” Reebok U.S. Open pin and a 1996 U.S. Open guide from The New York Times, ex-m+.

Lot 279.  15 Vintage Golfer Photos Including Arnold Palmer, SI Signed by Nancy Lopez. Fifteen original 8” x 10” photos of golfers, 11 b&w and many are from the 1940s. The golfers are Sam Byrd, Harry Cooper, Bruce Crampton, Jim Foulis, Vic Ghezzi (1941 PGA champion), Don January, Ky Lafoon, Porky Oliver, Palmer, Henry Picard, Horton Smith, Jimmy Thompson and Bud Ward. Ex-m. Also, Nancy Lopez signature on the July 10, 1978 Sports Illustrated cover (only). Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 280.  75+ 1925-40 Newspaper Pages with Golf Content – Sarazen, Hagan, Manero, Etc. Most pages come from the Portland Oregonian. They are well preserved and average ex. Forty-seven pages contain 1937 strips of the Sunday color comic Divot Diggers. Each strip is part of a full page and has a golf theme. A 1925 page contains a Walter Hagen ad for cigarettes. In a 1933 half-page ad, Hagen, Johnny Ferrell and Gene Sarazen promote their golf clubs. Toney Manero’s win at U.S. Open is the subject of a full-page 1937 ad for Camel Cigarettes (2 copies).
