Lot 690.  1991, 1992 “Heisman Collection” Series I, II Cards Signed by Berwanger, Walker, Owens. There are 20 cards in each series. Series I includes Hall of Famers Earl Campbell and Tony Dorsett. Blanchard, Plunkett, Griffin, Bo Jackson, Janowicz and Lujack are other notables. Jay Berwanger is widely known as the winner of the first Heisman Trophy and the first player chosen during the NFL’s first draft. He died in 2002. His blue sharpie signature is a 10 on his black shirt. Nineteen of the 20 Series II cards are included. Larry Kelley is missing. SMU and Detroit Lions great Doak Walker signed his card. The 1948 Heisman Trophy winner, he also lettered in basketball and baseball at SMU. He was reunited with his high school teammate Bobby Layne when he joined the Lions. Walker had a Hall of Fame pro career. He died in 1998. The Walker signature is a 10. Steve Owens was the 1969 Heisman Trophy winner. He was the second Oklahoma Sooner’s player to win the award. His signature is a 10. Other notables in the near-set are Kinnick, Staubach, Sanders and Testaverde. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 691.  Autographs of Heisman Winners Johnny Lattner, Billy Sims + ASU’s Darryl Clack. Lattner (1953 Heisman) and Sims (2003) signed the cover of the Downtown Athletic Club’s Heisman Journal. Full nm-m issue with old silver sharpie 10 signatures. The signature of Clack, Arizona State and Dallas Cowboys running back, is on the cover of the Sept. 1984 Sport. Cover only, no label. The signature is 8 of 10. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 692.  Bold Autograph of NFL Star Lyle Alzado on an Unlined Index Card. Below his sharpie signature, which is a gem mint 10, Alzado added his uniform number, “77.” In 1977, he was the AFC’s Defensive Player of the Year. Five years later, he was named the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year. His career spanned 1971-85 with the Broncos, Browns and Raiders. Alzado also appeared in a two movies, “Ernest Goes to Camp” and “Destroyer.” He was one of the first stars to acknowledge that he had abused steroids. He died in 1992 at the age of 43. Lot 695.  Early, Very Readable Dan Marino Autograph on the Nov. 14 1983 Sports Illustrated. Cover only, no label. Personalized to “Bob” with “Thanks for your support.” The signature is a 10 and unusually readable. Great Marino example! Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 697.  6 SI Covers Signed by (Mostly) College QBs Including Heisman Winner Andre Ware. Nine autographs. 1. Nov. 4, 1957 issue signed by Bobby Cox, Minnesota quarterback. Cover only, vg. Cox played professionally in the CFL and for the Boston Patriots. He died in 2003. Blue sharpie signature is 10 of 10. 2. Oct. 12, 1987 issue signed by Miami Hurricanes’ quarterback Steve Walsh. A Heisman Trophy runner-up in 1988, Walsh played professionally for the Cowboys, Saints, Bears, Rams, Buccaneers and Colts. Cover only, ex-m, with a sharpie 10 signature. 3. Nov. 27, 1989 issue signed by Heisman Trophy Winner Andre Ware and two runners-up - Major Harris and Tony Rice. Complete issue, ex. All three quarterbacks added their uniform numbers to their sharpie 10 signatures. 4. Jan. 9, 1990 issue autographed by Craig Erickson, Miami University quarterback. Cover only. Sharpie signature grades 10. 5. Sept. 24, 1990 cover signed by Notre Dame quarterback Rick Mirer. Cover only, sharpie 10 signature. 6. Aug. 30, 1993 issue signed by Florida State place kicker Scott Bentley. Ex issue. Bentley wrote “Jerry – Go Noles!” Signed also by another Seminole who served as Bentley’s holder. After college, Bentley played briefly for Denver and Washington. Signatures are 10s. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 698.  2 Different Sports Illustrated Covers Signed by Dennis Gaubatz, Baltimore Colts. A Baltimore linebacker and defensive leader, Gaubatz made the cover of SI twice – on Nov. 29, 1965 and Dec. 16, 1968. He signed both covers, and both signatures are 10s. Cover only. Gaubatz played at LSU. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 699.  Autograph of 2006 Heisman Trophy Winner Troy Smith on a Wilson NFL Football. College football’s top player in 2006 signed this “NFL Super Grip Cover” model in black sharpie. The signature is a 10 that seems unimprovable. It takes up the better part of an entire panel, and he added his OSU jersey “#10.” Smith was drafted in the fifth round of 2007 NFL draft by the Baltimore Ravens. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 700.  Football Signed by Ohio State Star Laurinaitis, Mini-Helmets by Wells, Pittman. James Laurinaitis, who won the 2006 Nagurski Award as the nation’s top defensive football player, signed a football that has the OSU logo. The black sharpie signature grades 9-10. Chris “Beanie” Wells and Antonio Pittman, both running backs, autographed OSU mini-helmets. Wells’ signature is an nm-m 8, and Pittman’s, a mint 10. Wells may be best known for the quote: “I think I came out of my mom’s womb wanting to go to Ohio State.” Laurinaitis and Wells are still in college and playing for Ohio State. Lot 701.  SI World Football League Cover Autographed by Paul Warfield. Along with Miami’s Larry Csonka and Jim Kiick, Warfield jumped to Memphis of the short-lived WFL for the 1975 season. This cover (only) of the July 28, 1975 issue shows Warfield with the two teammates. His sharpie signature is a 10. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Bart Starr, typed letter on his personal stationery, signed “Bart.” A 10. 3. Andre Ware, 1989 Heisman Trophy winner, on the July-August 1990 Beckett Football Card Magazine. His signature is a 10. 4. Eric Dickerson, front cover of a 1999 Boys’ Club of New York. Program. Large, bold signature is a 9 that shows up surprisingly well on a dark background. 5-6. Gene Washington (a 9) and Joe Montana (a 10) on the title page of the softcover book Forty Niners Collector’s Edition. 7-8. Lot 703.  3 Programs from NY Events Signed by Football HoFers, Other Sports Champions. Programs are nm. 1. Program from the 25th Annual Thurman Munson Awards Dinner signed on the front cover by Bobby Murcer, Donna DeVarona, Carly Patterson, all-around gold medal gymnast at the Athens Olympics in 2004 and three others. Sharpie signatures grade 10. 2. Program from the 19th Annual Buoniconti Fund dinner. Front cover has signatures that grade 10 by Hall of Fame football stars J (Jim) Kelly, John Mackey, Harry Carson and Nick Buoniconti, along with boxer Renaldo Snipes, 2002 Olympics gold medal skater Sarah Hughes and two others. 3. Program from a 1990 Celebrity Sports Night with the front cover signed by Mel Blount, Boog Powell, Hockey Hall of Fame member Clark Gillies, baseball umpire Ron Luciano (died 1995), Olympic champion gymnast and crowd favorite Nadia Comaneci, skater JoJo Starbuck, who signed “JoJo” followed by a star and $ sign, and three others. Lot 704.  4 Government Postcards Signed by 1950s College Football Players. All signatures are strong on postcards canceled in the 1950s. The signers are Dan Foldberg of West Point; Bob “Zug” Zastrow of Navy; Bob Williams of Notre Dame, and Le Roy (Coke) Ka-ne, apparently of Dayton. Ka-ne’s signature is a nm-m 8. The others are 10s. An end, Foldberg finished eighth in the 1950 Heisman voting. A small photo of him is affixed to the postcard. Zastrow, whose signature is personalized, played quarterback for Navy. Williams a quarterback for Notre Dame, is in the College Hall of Fame. Personalized signature. The note that Ka-ne wrote is interesting: “Hi Bob: I am glad to have a faithful fan. The first game we played – I was a flop. But this next game with St. Bonaventure if you’ll pray for me I’ll make a touch-down.” Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
