Lot 612.  October 1889 Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine with Baseball Content + a Bonus. The pages in this ex publication are numbered 803 to 960 with an additional advertising supplement. Pages 831-837 feature an article “Base-Ball – For The Spectator with 11 illustrations. As a bonus some additional pages from other Century Illustrated Monthly Magazines along with a portion of the Harper’s Weekly of Saturday July 5, 1902 are included.

Lot 617.  Baseball Banter, 1940 Humorous Paperback by Stan W. Carlson. Carlson is better known as the author of Lou Gehrig: Baseball’s Iron Man. In this 58-page booklet, he presents a “collection of humorous baseball stories.” This self-published first edition is nm-m, unusual for a 1940s softbound publication.

Lot 618.  5 American Association Publications 1935-1951. Some of the best who ever played the game found their way to the majors via the American Association. Each publication pictures and profiles a multitude of players and teams 1. 1935 American Association on Parade, ex. “Rip” Sewell is pictured as a Louisville Colonels, and Clyde Sukeforth as a catcher for the Toledo Mud Hens. Sukeforth may be best known as the Brooklyn Dodgers scout who was instrumental in signing Jackie Robinson. Guides 2-5 are issues of Who’s Who in the American Association. 2. 1948 ex. While reading through these sketch books of baseball history, you will come across familiar names like Enos Slaughter, Ted Williams, Phil Rizzuto, Vince DiMaggio, Preacher Roe, Danny Murtaugh, Alvin Dark, Harvey Haddix, Roy Campanella, Hoyt Wilhelm, Don Hoak, Don Larsen, Whitey Herzog, Jim Bunning and Roger Maris. One can read about the humble beginnings of some of MLB’s notable players. Lot 623.  Wisconsin Rainbow Baseball League Tenth Anniversary Booklet. Published in 1944, this 48-page publication captures the history of Wisconsin’s largest independent baseball league. Among the league stars pictured is Ray Buivid, an All-America in football at Marquette who played for the Chicago Bears in 1937 and 1938. The booklet is loaded with pictures of baseball teams and tributes to servicemen with ties to the league. Interesting reading. Vg-ex.
