Lot 304. Signature of Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black on the Oct. 9, 1964 Cover of Time. An Associate Justice from 1937-71, Black (1886-1971) is widely regarded as one of the most influential justices of the 20th century. Appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, he was an Alabama Democrat who represented the state in the U.S. Senate from 1926-37. Although once a member of the Ku Klux Klan, he typically supported rulings that strengthened civil rights and civil liberties. His signature is a bold 10 on the cover, which was folded for mailing. He dated the autograph “Oct 20, 64.” Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
