Lot 302. Time Issues Signed by Republicans – Goldwater, Rockefeller, Dirksen, Connally. Except for Connally, all were leaders of the Republican Party in the 1960s. 1. Barry Goldwater (1909-98), June 12, 1964 issue, nm 7 autograph. The signature is strong against a somewhat dark background. Goldwater served five terms in the U.S. Senate and ran unsuccessfully for President in 1964. 2. Nelson Rockefeller (1908-79), March 8, 1968 issue, mint 9 signature. He served a governor of New York and Vice President of the U.S. 3. Everett M. Dirksen (1896-1969) and Barry Goldwater, July 10, 1964 issue, mint to gem mint 9-10 Dirksen signature, light Goldwater autograph. A U.S. Senator from Illinois 1951-69, Dirksen was a strong supporter of civil rights legislation and the Vietnam War. 4. John Connally (1917-93), Jan. 17, 1964 issue, mint 9 signature. Governor of Texas as a Democrat, he switched parties and served as Treasury Secretary under President Nixon. The autographs are on Time covers that were folded for mailing.
