Lot 168. Wire Photos Featuring U. of Michigan Legends Willie Heston, Benny Oosterbaan. Heston was Michigan’s first All-American and captain of the unbeaten 1904 team. Oosterbaan was college football’s first outstanding receiver, the 1920s equivalent of the 1930s’ Don Hutson. The two men are shown together in a vg-ex 7 ¼” x 9 ¾” original wire photo from the files of the San Francisco Examiner dated Oct. 3, 1952. In a 7 ½” x 10 AP wire photo from 1956, Heston then 77, is shown announcing marriage plans. The photo has some light surface creases. Vg-ex. Three other from “International Newsreel” photos from 1929-31 feature Heston’s son, Willie Jr., as a Michigan halfback. They are about 6” x 8” and vg-ex. One has a small chip out of the bottom border. All but the Heston-Oosterbaan photos have captions. All five photos are well focused and exhibit excellent contrast.
