Football Memorabilia   20 Lots       »

Lot 155.  Washington Redskins’ First and Third Media Guides - 1947 and 1949. Great history and nostalgia are represented by the inaugural guide and the 1949 edition. Both are loaded with statistics and other information concerning the team, individual players and coaches. Sammy Baugh, quarterback for both the 1947 and 1949 Redskins, is pictured in the 1949 guide. The 1947 guide is vg with 42 pages. The 48-page 1949 guide has punch for a binder; otherwise vg-ex.
Winning Bid $264.

Lot 156.  Vintage Heavy Black Wool Spalding Football Sweater, Circa 1910. The three gold stripes on the left sleeve indicate that this wool sweater belonged to a junior. It has an A. G. Spalding label at the neck and inside seam. The condition is nm with one slight yarn pull. By today’s standards, the sweater would be considered a medium in size. A uniquely handsome, wearable vintage item.
Winning Bid $100.

Lot 157.  1940s Leather “Transition” Helmet. This black transition helmet’s shell is made of a composite (plastic-like) material on the inside and a leather outer shell. As the name implies, football helmets were in a transition stage. The football players’ protection was the driving force. Helmets have evolved from stocking caps, to leather, to part leather part plastic to all plastic. Also, the newer the helmet, the more internal padding has been added. This example has leather cushioning on the inside front, back and sides. There are webbing strips and a rubber pad to give some impact protection for the top of the head. The head webbings, rubber pad and chin straps are original. The piping shows wear from good game action. The left back panel of the helmet is stamped with 5139 and the right panel is stamped with 3159. There also is a number 29 lightly written in white on the back of the helmet (probably the player’s number).
Minimum Bid $275.

Lot 158.  Pittsburgh Maulers Scarce USFL Pennant. Playing at Three Rivers Stadium, the Maulers competed in the USFL during the 1984 season. This 12” x 30” pennant features the Maulers’ purple, orange and gray colors on a white background. The team’s logo is on a helmet. It features a worker in a hardhat swinging a maul. The pennant has a pin hole at the tip and a small, light stain in the upper left and along the top edge near the middle. Because the Maulers lasted for only one season, any memorabilia associated with the team is scarce.
Winning Bid $35.

Lot 159.  Pittsburgh Maulers Sideline Cape Used by Quarterback Glenn Carano. After seven seasons as a back-up with the Dallas Cowboys, Carano landed the starting quarterback job in 1984 with the Maulers of the upstart United States Football League (USFL). The Maulers played their home games at Three Rivers Stadium, but they practiced in suburban Pittsburgh at the Wallace School in the Baldwin-Whitehall School District. A janitor there obtained this raincoat-cape as the Maulers folded following the 1984 season. The cape has the #18, Carano’s uniform number, written inside just below the hood. Carano’s name is written near the inside bottom. The purple cape has the Maulers’ name and logo on the back and remnants of mud indicate game use. The logo shows some wear. Otherwise, the cape is ex-m and displays extremely well. Anything from the Maulers, and especially field equipment, is extremely scarce.
Winning Bid $185.

Lot 160.  Rare Chicago Cardinals 1940s-50s Full-Sized Football Pennant. Wonderful white on red pennant with a huge cardinal perched atop a football. The Cardinals competed in Chicago from 1920-59. Half-dozen tack holes, slight tip clip, slight wear, bold appearance.
Winning Bid $113.

Lot 161.  1950s New York Football Giants Full-Sized Pennant. Colorful pennant with a blue field has several tack holes along the white stripe and one near the tip, which shows very slight fraying. Displays as ex-m.
Winning Bid $125.

Lot 162.  Early 1960s Mike Ditka, Y.A. Tittle, Jim Taylor, Jim Brown All-Pro Wrist Watch. This Swiss-made watch is operational and in exceptionally fine condition. It features a brown football on the white faceplate. Superimposed onto the football are the facsimile signatures of Ditka, Tittle, Taylor and Brown along with the words ALL-PRO. The crystal is free of scratches. It has a metal band. Nm-m.
Winning Bid $92.

Lot 163.  Original 1959-63 Jon Arnett Los Angeles Rams Hartland Statue. The face mask is broken and the pants are dark cream. Otherwise, a clean, collectible example with the base present.
Winning Bid $92.

Lot 164.  “All American” 1960s Bobbin’ Head Bank. This ceramic composite 3 ½” x 7” bobbin head has a blue helmet and jersey, white pants and black shoes. The figure is holding a football, showing a nice smile and has a brown chin strap. Japan sticker on bottom with the original coin plug. There are 2 decals; the one on the helmet shows three stars, the one on the jersey front shows “All American.” With a few very small nicks, this ex bobbin head displays well.
Minimum Bid $75.

Lot 165.  1968-70 St. Louis Cardinals Bobbing Head in the Original Package. This 7” bobble is from the NFL-AFL Gold Round Base “Merger Series.” It remains packaged with a 9” Cardinals pennant, a miniature helmet pencil sharpener and a red and white 5” football. The package was put together by Pro Football Merchandising of New Jersey. The bobbing head is nm-m with a couple of minor spots of foxing on the helmet.
Winning Bid $83.

Lot 166.  2 Vintage Wire Photos of Ohio State Heisman Trophy Winner Les Horvath. With Horvath in the lineup, the Buckeyes were winners. He lettered in football in 1940, 1941, 1942 and 1944. With him at right halfback in 1942, OSU went undefeated and won the national championship. The next year, with Horvath in dental school and not eligible for football, the Buckeyes finished out of the AP Top 20. In 1944 because of rule changes, Horvath was eligible again. Playing tailback in the single wing and quarterback in the T formation, he led Ohio State to a 9-0 record, the Big Ten championship and second place behind Army in the AP poll. At season’s end, Horvath ranked second in the nation in rushing and third in total offense. That was good enough to make him a unanimous All-America, Most Valuable Player in the Big Ten – and the first Buckeye to win the Heisman Trophy. He graduated from dental school in 1945, joined the Navy as an ensign, and was discharged in 1947. He played three years of pro football, 1947-49, for the Rams and Browns. The 1944 wire photos show off Horvath’s abilities against rival Michigan. Later in the season, his participation in the East-West All-Star Game boosted ticket sales. The wire photos represent the usual condition of vintage newspaper photos including crop marks etc.
Minimum Bid $75.

Lot 167.  Original 1940 Wire Photo of Heisman Winner Nile Kinnick and an Injured Player. In this Jan. 13, 1940, International News Photo taken in New York, Kinnick provides encouragement to an injured prep school football player. Kinnick gave the young man an All-American blanket. The 6 ½” x 8 ½” photo has a ½” tear along the right border, a heavy crease toward the bottom and various lighter creases. The caption is on the back. With strong contrast, the photo displays nicely, and vintage photos of Kinnick are scarce.
Winning Bid $25.

Lot 168.  Wire Photos Featuring U. of Michigan Legends Willie Heston, Benny Oosterbaan. Heston was Michigan’s first All-American and captain of the unbeaten 1904 team. Oosterbaan was college football’s first outstanding receiver, the 1920s equivalent of the 1930s’ Don Hutson. The two men are shown together in a vg-ex 7 ¼” x 9 ¾” original wire photo from the files of the San Francisco Examiner dated Oct. 3, 1952. In a 7 ½” x 10 AP wire photo from 1956, Heston then 77, is shown announcing marriage plans. The photo has some light surface creases. Vg-ex. Three other from “International Newsreel” photos from 1929-31 feature Heston’s son, Willie Jr., as a Michigan halfback. They are about 6” x 8” and vg-ex. One has a small chip out of the bottom border. All but the Heston-Oosterbaan photos have captions. All five photos are well focused and exhibit excellent contrast.
Winning Bid $20.

Lot 233.  Ticket Stubs from a 1946 Steelers Game, 1976 Roto with Rooney. Two ticket stubs stamped “Complimentary” are from an Oct. 6 game against the New York Giants at Forbes Field. The visitors edged the Steelers, 17-14. Each stub has two punch holes and otherwise is ex-m to nm. “Art Rooney at 75” is the subject of a cover article in the Jan. 18, 1976, Pittsburgh Press Sunday Roto supplement. Great cover artwork, vg-ex. Also, a reprint photo of the 1933 team, then nicknamed the “Pirates,” vg-ex. Rooney is in the photo.
Winning Bid $45.
