Baseball Guides   9 Lots

Lot 127.  1933 Hardbound “Who’s Who in Major League Baseball.” Published by Grover C. Buxton of Chicago and compiled by sportswriter Harold (Speed) Johnson, this scarce period reference is what every annual should be. Consisting of 544-pages, it devotes a full page to several hundred baseball players. Each player is represented by a large photo. In addition, the publication provides the player’s full record and a biographical sketch with career highlights. The “Who’s Who” starts with Earl “Sparky” Adams and ends with Tom Zachary. Judge Landis, managers, owners and other personalities also are profiled. Ex-m copy with a red cover, and without a dust jacket. Scarce and desirable.
Winning Bid $472.

Lot 128.  1935-1952 Near Complete Run of Who’s Who in Major League Baseball. Sixteen of the eighteen issues are here. All are hardbacks. These guides could easily be known as the “Callahan” guides because B. E. Callahan published them during their 18-year run. Speed Johnson edited them 1935-37. Chicago Daily News sports editor John P. Carmichael then edited the annuals through their final issue in 1952. The issues from 1935-40 are without dust jackets. The covers for these years range from vg-ex to ex-m with contents that range from ex to nm. Issues for 1936 and 1938 have the owner’s name inside, and the 1938 volume has light pencil marks on the title page. The 1935 issue is the edition that contains both the American and National Leagues. The leagues also were represented by separate volumes. The other volumes: 1942, ex cover, vg dj, ex contents. 1944, ex cover, vg dj, ex contents. 1945, ex-m cover, ex dj, ex-m contents. 1946, vg-ex cover, vg dj, ex-m contents. 1947, nm cover, vg dj, nm contents. 1948, vg-ex cover, ex-m contents, no dj. 1949, ex cover, owner’s name inside, otherwise ex-m contents, no dj. 1950, nm cover, vg-ex dj, nm contents. 1951, ex-m cover, vg-ex dj, nm contents. 1952, ex-m cover, vg dj, ex-m contents.
