Color Supplement of the 1892 N.Y. Giants from the New York Recorder.

Lot 28. Color Supplement of the 1892 N.Y. Giants from the New York Recorder. This supplement is among the earliest sports lithographs. In 1892, the Recorder became one of the first U.S. newspapers to install a color printing press. Subsequently, the paper demonstrated its color lithography capabilities by publishing a variety of sports and non-sport supplements. In this photo, members of the Giants are pictured in two rows with the grandstand as a backdrop. Buck Ewing and Amos Rusie are near the center of the 8 ½” x 10 ½” photo, and Jim O’Rourke is pictured at the extreme right. This supplement has been glued to a piece of construction paper. A piece of red tape at the top and some cropping marks in pencil suggest that the supplement might have come from the newspaper’s archives. There are tears, creases, some stains and pencil markings. The Recoder’s new press did a fine job of printing this lithograph, and the image is exceptional.
Winning Bid $248.
