Lot 719. Time Signed by Vietnam Era Military Leaders – Westmore-land, Abrams, Etc. Covers only, all folded for mailing. Two different issues were signed by the leaders of U.S. forces in Vietnam, William Westmoreland (died 1993), Feb. 19, 1965, and Creighton W. Abrams (d. 1974), April 19, 1968. Westmoreland’s signature is a mint 9. Abrams signed a label that is affixed to the cover, and the signature is a 10. The Feb. 5 issue has the signatures of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: Earle G. Wheeler (Chairman, d. 1975), David McDonald (Navy), John McConnell (Air Force), Wallace M. Greene, Jr. (Marines) and Harold K. Johnson (Army). These signatures are 9s and 10s. Gen. Johnson is pictured on the Dec. 10, 1965 issue; his autograph is a nm-m 8. Admiral U. G. Sharp (d. 2001) signed the Aug. 14, 1964, cover; his signature is a 9-10. Nine autographs.
