Oversized Matchbook from Buick Promoting the 1936 Louis-Schmeling Bout.
Lot 573. Oversized Matchbook from Buick Promoting the 1936 Louis-Schmeling Bout. Max Schmeling knocked young Joe Louis out in the 12th round at Yankee Stadium on June 19. It was Louis’ first loss. Two years later in a title bout, Louis KO’d Schmeling in the first round. The front cover of the colorful 3 ¼” x 4 ¼” matchbook encourages boxing fans to “Tune in on the Biggest Match Yet!” The date is incorrectly given as June 18. Inside is a drawing of Clem McCarthy and Edwin Hill, who will “describe this great battle” on N.B.C. stations. The matches are intact with “It’s a Knock-Out!” printed across them. The back cover provides 16 reasons to buy Buick. Technically vg-ex because of light surface wear on the front and small stains on the back. Better appearance.
Winning Bid $92.
