Lot 627.  1910 First Edition Hardback of “Touching Second” by John J. Evers of Evers to Tinker to Chance fame. This book by “The Crab” with Hugh S. Fullerton contains anecdotes plus instructions on how to play the game. It is without a dust jacket as issued. The cover has a litho pastedown picturing Evers fielding a ball. A stain is evident the length of the spine, and the exterior has a g-vg appearance. The interior is clean and ex+ with all 16 plates in place, showing such stars as Wagner, Mathewson, Cobb and Lajoie.

Lot 628.  Instructions on How to Play Baseball from Mickey Cochrane, Spalding. Cochrane provides instructions in his 1939 book, “Baseball: The Fan’s Game,” 1939 stated first edition hardback, no dj, vg book, owner’s name inside. Spalding’s advice comes in three 1930s paperbacks. John B. Foster wrote two 1935 books, “How to Bat,” No 80R, “Red Cover” Series, vg-ex, and “How to Catch and How to Run Bases,” No. 496, ex. The third volume, unattributed, is “How to Pitch,” No. 479, 1934, vg-ex. Pictures of future Hall of Fame players illustrate all three. Also, “A Thinking Man’s Guide to Baseball” by Leonard Koppett, 1967, ex dj, nm book.

Lot 629.  New York Yankees Histories, Publications. The two books recounting the history of the Yankees are the keys to this collection. 1. The New York Yankees: An Informal History, Frank Graham, 1943, vg book, no dj. This is the “Putnam” history of the Yankees. 2. Dynasty: The New York Yankees 1949-1964, Peter Golenbock, 1975, owner’s name crossed out inside, vg-ex. 3-7. Scorecards or scorebooks for 1973, 1978, 1979, 1984 and 1994. Thurman Munson is among the players on the cover of the 1973 edition. Vg-ex.

Lot 630.  Babe Ruth as I knew him by Waite Hoyt. This is the Dell Publishing 1948 softcover version by the Hall of Fame pitcher. This 50-page magazine-format publication is extensively illustrated with photos of the Babe playing baseball and spending time with fans, family members and celebrity friends. The cover, extensively split along the spine, remains attached, has a ½” edge tear and a mark on Ruth’s face. The interior is complete and ex.

Lot 631.  Book of National League Baseball Uniform Numbers, 1932-57. National League players and the uniform numbers they wore are listed in this 3” three-ring binder. Players and numbers for the Braves, Cardinals, Cubs, Dodgers, Giants, Phils, Pirates and Reds are listed in numerical order by year, and then alphabetically and numerically. Excellent reference.

Lot 632.  Five Books, Including the Seymour Trilogy, of Baseball History. The three volumes by the Cornell University Ph.D. and history professor remain the definitive scholarly history of baseball. The first volume, “Baseball: The Early Years,” appeared in 1960, and “Baseball: The Golden Age” followed in 1971. No dj as issued, ex. Seymour published “Baseball: The People’s Game” in 1990. Nm book and dj. All three appear to be first editions. Baseball history in one volume is offered by Lee Allen in “100 Years of Baseball,” 1950, first edition, owner’s name inside, vg-ex book, no dj. Minor league baseball history is captured in “Bush League” by Robert Obojski, 1975 stated first printing, owner’s name inside, ex book and dj.

Lot 633.  “Five Straight Errors on Ladies’ Day” by Walter H. Nagle as told to Bryson Reinhardt. Book deals with Nagle’s stint in the Pacific Coast League with the Los Angeles Angels in the early 1900s. Nagle faced the likes of Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb and Walter Johnson and met such leaders as Henry Ford and Luther Burbank. Introduction by Casey Stengel. 1965 first edition hardback, nm book in vg-ex dj. Delightful reading.

Lot 636.  All 3 Volumes of SABR’s Groundbreaking Minor League Baseball Stars. Each volume contains a brief narrative and the career records of about 175 of the minor leagues’ better players. The first volume was published by The Society for American Baseball Research in 1978, Volume II in 1985 and Volume III in 1992. Excellent reading and reference.

Lot 638.  The DiMaggio Albums. Published by Putnam in 1989, this two-volume set chronicles the career of Joe DiMaggio, who provides an introduction and commentaries. Volume 1 covers 1932-1941, and Volume 2, 1942-1951. The books are in the original slipcase. Nm-m.

Lot 639.  2 Excellent Minor League Reference Books. Both are hardbacks. In more than 400 pages, The Encyclopedia of Minor League Baseball lists baseball team alphabetically by city, state and league with the years the teams played and the leagues involved. It also presents the standings of every league beginning in 1902. Written by Lloyd Johnson and Miles Wolff, 1993 stated first edition, nm book, ex dj. Johnson is the author also of The Minor League Register, which lists the year-by-year records of more than 800 of the best minor league players and 50 managers. First edition, 1994, nm book ex+ dj. Essential for minor league research.
