Premium Baseball Memorabilia   10 Lots

Lot 12.  Vintage 1934 Rockola World Series Pinball Machine. David Rockola, best known for producing jukeboxes, also created many of the early pinball machines. Because of their graphics and mechanical action, these machines capture the interest of many collectors today. In this coin-operated World Series pinball machine, the balls become little men, running around the bases, scoring singles, doubles, triples and home runs. This game is operational with a working coin slot and shooter. It releases the balls, and it registers outs. The base-running mechanism works intermittently. The 16” x 35” game is intact and retains its original matching legs, standing 35” to 42” front to back. The game board and cabinet show normal wear; they have not been abused. Ex. Please note: Because of the size of this game, the cost of the shipping it may be substantial.
Winning Bid $949.

Lot 13.  Magnificent Christy Mathewson 1914 Royal Tailors Advertising Display. Matty emerges from the New York Giants’ locker room dressed in “a three-button double breasted English sack overcoat with cuff sleeves and two lower patch pockets with flaps” in this advertisement from a salesman’s sample book. An inset shows Mathewson pitching. This sample is unique because the clothing swatches are still attached. This is the only Mathewson example we have seen with the original swatches. We originally offered this item in CCA 2 in 2003. It sold for more than $1,200. It is professionally framed with archival glass on the front and Plexiglas on the back so that the swatches can be viewed. The artwork measures 15” x 19” framed to 27” x 30.” Connie Mack considered Mathewson “the greatest pitcher who ever lived.” Along with Pete Alexander, he continues to hold the National League record for career victories at 373.
Winning Bid $770.

Lot 14.  1950s “PREMIERE Gum and Card Vendor” Tabletop Vending Machine. This vintage machine dispensed gumballs and cards in the 1950s. The two glass panels displaying the cards are intact. The baseball cards are not included with the vending machine. This machine has a few very small paint chips on the top; otherwise, about 95% of the original paint is present. The vending machine is original and in good working order; two keys that provide access to the machine’s interior are present. The center glass panel appears to be original. Text on the machine says “Premiere Ball Gum and Card, INSERT 2 PENNIES TURN HANDLE.” We have not had a machine of this type for quite a while. Previous machines of this type brought more than $1,000.
Winning Bid $1,149.

Lot 15.  Important, Rare 1996 Hall of Fame Induction Pin Set Featuring Mantle, Ford. The two pins offered here are exceedingly rare. The pin for 1974 honors Cool Papa Bell, Bottomley, Sam Thompson, Conlan, Mantle and Ford. Both pins were presented at the 1996 Hall of Fame induction ceremony to the new members, the families of the deceased baseball greats and the media. Distribution was very limited. Lot 16.  Original Artwork for the New York Yankees 1952 World Series Press Pin. Mickey Mantle’s hitting and excellent pitching from Vic Raschi and Allie Reynolds enabled the Yankees to win their fourth straight World Championship under the leadership of Casey Stengel. The series featured another classic confrontation between the Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers. To commemorate the series, Balfour artist and executive vice president Norman Shorrock created the design for the Yankees’ World Series press pin. This original artwork, which was used to produce the pin, is about 2 ¾” x 3 ¼” on a 6 ¼” x 8 ¾” board. Some stains on the board could easily be matted out. It is housed in a black folder with a silver label that reads, “Created by the L.G. Balfour Company Attleboro, Mass.” The artwork is nm-m and absolutely unique.
Winning Bid $242.

Lot 17.  Original Artwork for the New York Yankees 1955 World Series Press Pin. In 1955, the Yankees were edged out of the championship by the Dodgers in seven games. The Yankees’ press pin, however, is a winner. Balfour artist and executive vice president Norman Shorrock created this design for it. The original artwork used to produce the pin is about 2 ¾” x 3” on a 6” x 8” board. There are a few minor stains on the board, which is housed in a black folder. The artwork itself is nm-m and one-of-a-kind. If you want a truly unique Yankees collectible, this is it!
Winning Bid $393.

Lot 18.  Original Artwork for the Cincinnati Reds’ 1964 (Phantom) Press Pin! As the 1964 season drew to a close, Balfour artist and executive vice president Norman Shorrock created a design for the Reds’ World Series press pin. The Reds were locked in a tight race with St. Louis, which ultimately edged out the Reds by one game to win the pennant. Shorrock’s creation features the Cincinnati mascot inside a red circle. The artwork itself is about 4” in diameter on a 8” x 12” board. Some stains on the board could easily be matted out. The artwork is nm-m and one of a kind.
Winning Bid $100.

Lot 19.  Original Artwork for the 1984 Hall of Fame Induction Pin + the Pin Itself. Norm Shorrock, Balfour artist and executive vice president, created the Hall of Fame pin that honors these five men. Offered here is Shorrock’s original artwork, which Balfour used to produce the pin. The colorful artwork itself is about 6” x 6” on 9” x 12” art board inside a Balfour presentation folder. Nm-m. It comes with a nm-m copy of the pin inside the original box.
Winning Bid $110.

Lot 20.  1909 Pittsburg Pirates National League Pennant Winners Premium from the Pittsburg Press. Items in the sports collectibles field simply don’t get much better than this one. The 12 ¼” x 20 ¾” premium features members of the storied 1909 Pittsburg Pirates. They are pictured individually in oval Carl Horner photographs that, together, make for a magnificent display. Text on the premium says: “Published By Pittsburg Press, Pittsburg, PA. Copyright 1909 Carl J. Horner Co.” Professionally framed to 18 ¾” x 27 ¼”, this item was issued to commemorate the Pirates’ National League championship. After winning an unprecedented 110 games while loosing only 42, this team went on to beat Ty Cobb and the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. That year Honus Wagner (pictured near the center in the same photo used to produce the famed T206 card) led the league in batting average, on base percentage, slugging percentage, total bases, doubles, RBI and extra base hits. Besides Wagner, Manager Fred Clark, Owner Barney Dreyfuss, Tommy Leach, Babe Adams, Vic Willis, Deacon Phillippe and many others are pictured. The premium exhibits creasing throughout along with some border chipping and minor tears. The original bright orange and navy blue colors remain brilliant. Typically, they have faded. Examples significantly less stunning have sold for in excess of several thousand dollars.
Winning Bid $879.

Lot 22.  2 Arched Windows from the Entrance Area of Forbes Field. Completed in 1909, Forbes Field was demolished in 1971. Throughout the history of the ballpark, these 5’ x 10’ arched windows graced the entrance façade. Forbes Field was home to both the Pittsburgh Pirates and Pittsburgh Steelers. After the Pirates razed Forbes Field, they used a number of these arched windows as a backdrop for the bar at the Allegheny Club in their new home, Three Rivers Stadium. Apparently as a result, mirrored surfaces were substituted for the glass panels. It is difficult to imagine a better backdrop, or a better conversation piece, than one of these windows housed in the right home or sports bar. Here is your chance to bid on one or both of the windows. Please note: Two windows are available. You are bidding on ONE. The winning bidder will have the option of taking one or both windows. If the winner takes both, the amount due will be 2 times the winning bid. If the winner takes only one, the second window will be offered to the under-bidder at the winning bid. Please note also: Shipping by freight to California is about $1,400. This number does not include insurance. Delivery within 3 hours of the Pittsburgh area can be arranged. Shipping or delivery is in addition to the winning bid.
Winning Bid $862.
