Lot 20. 1909 Pittsburg Pirates National League Pennant Winners Premium from the Pittsburg Press. Items in the sports collectibles field simply don’t get much better than this one. The 12 ¼” x 20 ¾” premium features members of the storied 1909 Pittsburg Pirates. They are pictured individually in oval Carl Horner photographs that, together, make for a magnificent display. Text on the premium says: “Published By Pittsburg Press, Pittsburg, PA. Copyright 1909 Carl J. Horner Co.” Professionally framed to 18 ¾” x 27 ¼”, this item was issued to commemorate the Pirates’ National League championship. After winning an unprecedented 110 games while loosing only 42, this team went on to beat Ty Cobb and the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. That year Honus Wagner (pictured near the center in the same photo used to produce the famed T206 card) led the league in batting average, on base percentage, slugging percentage, total bases, doubles, RBI and extra base hits. Besides Wagner, Manager Fred Clark, Owner Barney Dreyfuss, Tommy Leach, Babe Adams, Vic Willis, Deacon Phillippe and many others are pictured. The premium exhibits creasing throughout along with some border chipping and minor tears. The original bright orange and navy blue colors remain brilliant. Typically, they have faded. Examples significantly less stunning have sold for in excess of several thousand dollars.
