Lot 131. Early 1900s Montreal Amateur Athletic Association “Winged Wheel” Stick Pin. In 1893, the M.A.A.A. team became the first to win the Stanley Cup, as champions of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada. The team won the trophy again in 1894, 1902 and 1903. The winged wheel symbolized the club, which sponsored teams in cycling, lacrosse and other sports. The main portion of the pin offered here is about 3/8” wide and 5/8” high. A small pearl, about 1/16” in diameter, rests in the center. The stick extends about 2 ½”. The pin, which comes in a box from Henry Birks & Sons Limited, is ex-m to nm. Accompanying the pin are: 1. A small winged wheel enamel pin with a threaded post. 2. A copy of A Sporting Evolution: The Montreal Amateur Athletic Association 1881-1981 by Don Morrow, published by the association, 1981 apparent first edition, ex-m+ book, no dj. Scarce. 3. An 11” x 14” reproduction photo of the 1893 team. 4. A 17 ½” x 12” photo featuring M.A.A.A. memorabilia, nm.
