Signed Photos of Chicago Bears Hall of Fame Greats Sid Luckman, “Bulldog” Turner.

Lot 116. Signed Photos of Chicago Bears Hall of Fame Greats Sid Luckman, “Bulldog” Turner. In 1939, Geoge Halas convinced the Pittsburgh Steelers to draft Luckman second overall and then trade him to the Bears. At first, Luckman had little interest in pro football. Intrigued by the challenge of a new offense and tempted by Halas’ $5,000 salary offer, Luckman joined the team. Soon, he mastered an offense that revolutionized football. Only Sammy Baugh of the Washington Redskins had the passing skills to match Luckman. Teammate Turner, coming out of little known Hardin-Simmons University, was the Bears’ first-round draft pick in 1940. At first, Turner didn’t want to be on the Bears. It turned out that the Detroit Lions’ owner had paid him $200 to “get his teeth fixed” and turn down other teams’ proposals. Tampering was frowned upon even then. As a result, the Lions were fined $5,000, and the Bears got a great two-way player. Teammate George Musso once said of Bulldog: “Who knows what kind of player he would have been if he ever got to rest during a game?” The two 8” x 10” black and white photos are individually matted and framed to about 12” x 14”. Both signatures are 10s. Photos are both ex and display even better. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $180.
