Baseball Publications   8 Lots

Lot 191.  Scarce, High-Quality Sports Illustrated 2nd Issue with the Yankees “Card” Insert. Dated Aug. 23, 1954, this second issue, with golf as its cover theme, is tougher to find than the first. Copies of the first issue were made available as “samples.” This ex-m issue is especially desirable because the cover does not have a mailing label. The very collectible 1954 Topps Yankees insert, which includes Mickey Mantle, is at least nm. Card fronts and backs are printed, and the black & white Mantle “card” is mint. Mantle was not included in the regular 1954 Topps set. Outanding copy.
Winning Bid $291.

Lot 193.  41 Sporting News Baseball Guides Spanning 1942-95. Despite the volume of information on the Internet, these publications remain excellent resources and reading material. 1940s: 1942, first issue, inside added blue covers with the original covers intact; 1943, 1944, 1946. The first two issues are ex-m and unusually nice. The next two are vg-ex. 1950s: 1954, 1955, both vg+ to ex. 1957 ex, 1958 Ted Williams ex, 1959 g-vg. 1960s: 1963-1969. Winning Bid $264.

Lot 194.  Baseball 1943 – Hardbound Copy of the Commissioner’s Baseball Guide. J. G. Taylor Spink, publisher of The Sporting News, and Judge Landis, the Baseball Commissioner, didn’t especially like each other. After their feud intensified in 1942, Landis refused to allow Spink to publish the “official” baseball guide for 1943. Spink published a guide anyway, although it wasn’t labeled “official,” and Landis published his own guide, which received very limited distribution. His 736-page guide was not offered to the public. Along with information on the majors and minors, it contains a 54-page list of baseball players and other baseball men serving in the Armed Forces. The copy offered here has paper residue inside the front and back covers. Otherwise, it is ex to ex-m.
Winning Bid $45.

Lot 195.  Near-Complete Run of 128 Issues of The Sporting News, July 1, 1943-Dec. 27, 1945. Two issues are missing from 1944 and two from 1945. Key issues include: 1943 – July 8 All-Star Game, Sept. 30 World Series, Oct. 28 Babe Ruth-Judge Landis cover, Nov. 4 Stan Musial MVP cover, Dec. 30 Chandler-McCarthy-Griffith as #1 Men of the Year. 1944: March 23 Babe Ruth’s called shot, July 6 All-Star Game, July 13 Musial-Dixie Walker cover, Oct. 5 and 12 World Series, Dec. 28 Marion-Sewell-DeWitt as #1 Men of the Year. 1945: Jan. 11 TSN All-Star team, April 19 Opening Day, Oct. 11 and 18 World Series, Nov. 1 Dodgers Sign Jackie Robinson, Dec. 27 Newhouser-Bluge-Wrigley #1 Men of the Year. This a clean, very collectible collection averaging vg-ex.
Winning Bid $429.

Lot 196.  Complete Run of SABR’s Baseball Research Journal, 1973-2001, from Issue #2. These 29 publications from the Society for American Baseball Research feature articles by members who take a fresh look at the development of baseball, frequently using statistical analyses. Originally SABR’s “annual historical & statistical review,” the Journal has broadened its horizons over the years to include biographical sketches and various historical aspects of the game. The inaugural 1972 issue is absent from this run, which is complete for the next 29 years. The issues average ex-m. The 10-year index, published in 1982, also is present. Some of the more recent issues, which are still available from SABR, sell for at least $6 each.
Winning Bid $204.

Lot 197.  Complete Run of SABR’s The National Pastime, 22 Issues, 1982-2002, Plus a Bonus. Members of the Society for American Baseball Research received the premier issue offered here in 1982. Each issue contains multiple articles on baseball history from the game’s formative years to the present. When still available from SABR, these periodicals sell for at least $7. Ex-m. As a bonus, two other SABR publications are here, the 1981 Baseball Historical Review and This Date in Baseball History, published in 1976.
Winning Bid $168.
