All 3 Volumes of One Thousand Sport Stories by Al Spink, Sporting News Founder.

Lot 201. All 3 Volumes of One Thousand Sport Stories by Al Spink, Sporting News Founder. Spink published all three in 1921. Born in Quebec, Canada, he moved with his parents after the Civil War to Chicago. There, he developed an interest in baseball. In 1875, he moved to St. Louis, where he was instrumental in establishing the American Association St. Louis Browns. In 1886, he founded The Sporting News, which he sold to his brother Charles in 1895. After that, he wrote for the Evening Post and created one of the first baseball histories. Knows as the “dean of American sport writers,” Spink covers the world of sports widely in his Sport Stories. Baseball is a major focus, but he writes also of Bobby Jones, George Gipp, Bill Tilden, Jack Dempsey, skater Charles Jewtraw, billiards players, race horses and wrestlers. Each story is brief, covering several pages at most. Each volume is an illustrated hardbacof 475-500 pages. Vg-ex books, no dust jackets. Plenty of enjoyable, informative reading here.
