Lot 470. Washington, D.C. Area Football Collection, featuring memorabilia from American, Catholic, George Washington and Georgetown Universities and nearby high schools. Staff Cassell, head football coach at American University, is the subject of an article and a Jim Berryman cartoon in the 10/24/40 issue of D.C.’s Evening Star, g. Catholic U. makes its presence known with a 1938 program for a game against Ohio’s Miami. The program pictures “Dutch” Bergman, Catholic’s head coach, who was the other halfback in the backfield with Notre Dame’s George Gipp in 1919. Rocco Pirro, who later played professionally with Pittsburgh and Buffalo, was the Catholic team’s quarterback. Vg-ex program. George Washington is represented by student activity ticket booklets for 1939-40 and 1948-49. The latter may be primarily for basketball. There also is a ticket stub, g with a ½” tear, for a 1946 game against Georgetown at Griffith Stadium. Early 1900s college silks are present for both teams, vg+. Georgetown’s 1974 media guide (ex-m) also is offered, along with a ticket stub from a 1950 Villanova game, g+. One of the highlights of this collection is a 1940s book cover from Thompson’s Dairy, ex. Of the remaining 19 items, 16 relate to scholastic football in or near D.C. Nine are programs – for the 1944 (ex+) and 1947 (g) Scholastic All-Star Games at Griffith Stadium, for a 1944 championship game (g), for early 1950s games (4) and for 1974 and 1976 All-Star Games at the University of Maryland. Also, a 1932 schedule for Gilman Country School (g), a 1939 issue of Scholastic Coach (vg-ex), two early 1950s programs for games between the semi-pro Waynesboro Tigers and Car Credit of D.C., a 1966 Atlantic Coast Football League Program, a letterman’s “R,” a pin from Woodrow Wilson High School, three copies of a photo of the Kanawha Prep team and a vintage photo of a team from Alexandria.
