Rare 1937 Cole Bros. Circus Program with Clyde Beatty on the Cover.

Lot 177. Rare 1937 Cole Bros. Circus Program with Clyde Beatty on the Cover. The program is for a March 18-April 11 run at the New York Hippodrome. A wild animal tamer and trainer, Beatty was a major celebrity star of the 1930s-50s. He was best known for his “fighting act,” which was intended to demonstrate his courage and his control of ferocious animals. At times in his act, he mixed various wild beasts - leopards, pumas, hyenas, and as many as 40 tigers and lions of both sexes. His circus fame landed him starring roles in as many as 10 movies. Beatty toured with various circus, including Cole Bros.’ from 1935 through 1938. In 1945, he bought a circus. In 1958, he merged it with Cole Bros. to form the Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. Circus, billed as “The World’s Largest Circus Under the Big Top.” A drawing on the cover of this 1937 shows Beatty taming a lion. Inside, seven of the 32 pages picture Beatty or present information about him. The program is ex with several light or corner creases and a couple of minor, innocuous marks. This is truly a very rare program.
