Lot 170.  Original Vintage Theodore Roosevelt Political Pin. This colorful pin is 1 ¼” in diameter. It features a black and white photographic portrait of President Roosevelt encircled in a gold wreath with an eagle perched above the wreath. Ships at sea can be noted in the background. The appearance of the pin is exceptionally nice. It does have a stain along the top edge and to the right of Roosevelt’s face. The paper backing of the pin remains intact. It reads: “Buttons made by the Whitehead & Hoag Co. Newark N.J., U.S.A. Pat. April 14, 1896, July 21, 1896.” This is a superior item.

Lot 172.  2 1940s Pinup Girl Punchboards. These are the heavy-duty punchboards, each about 11” x 13” x 5/8” to 7/8” thick. One is titled “Clean Sport,” and the other, a die-cut, is titled “Canteen.” Each has a couple of chips; otherwise, ex-m.

Lot 173.  17 Magazines with Marilyn Monroe Covers Including Classic "Life, Look" Issues. Monroe is the cover girl on nine issues of Life, including the sultry pose on the 4/7/52 issue. Vg-ex example with some sunning along the bottom outside the image area. Other Life issues are from 5/25/53 with Jane Russell in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” 4/20/59, 8/15/60 with Yves Montand, 6/22/62, 8/17/62, 8/7/64, 9/8/72 and 8/82. These issues are a mix of vg-ex and ex. Five issues of Look are offered, including a classic with Monroe as a Georgia Tech cheerleader, 9/9/52, vg+ to ex. She also is on the covers of issues from 6/30/53 with Lauren Bacall and Betty Grable, 7/5/60 with Montand, 1/31/61 with Clark Gable and 1/12/65 with various figures. Average vg-ex. Other covers: Collier’s, 7/9/54 g-vg. Police Gazette, 1/59, vg-ex. This Week, 12/11/60, ex+. Also, a copy of the 1983 Playbill for “Marilyn: An American Fable.” Ex+.

Lot 174.  45 Vintage Life, Sunday News with Celebrity Covers. Most striking in this collection are 9 New York Sunday News covers from the late 1940s and early 1950s with such stars as Jimmy Stewart, Gregory Peck, Helen Hayes, William Holden, Joseph Cotton and a very young Robert Wagner. Each color image is about 11” x 15”. The issues with Stewart and Holden each have a tear of up to 3”. Otherwise, this group averages vg-ex, and the covers display very well. Fifteen issues of Life spanning 1946-84 feature diverse entertainers, including the Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Michael Jackson (2), Harrison Ford, Daryl Hannah, Raquel Welch, Charlie Chaplin, Liz Taylor and Ann-Margret. Two 1970s issues of the Saturday Evening Post have covers with Paul Newman and Norman Rockwell. Other publications include Ebony, Architectural Digest, Modern Screen, Song Hits, Screen Stories, Screenland, Radio Album and Quick with stars such as Diahann Carroll, Sinatra, Andy Williams, Bob Hope (2), Esther Williams (2), Ava Gardner, Mario Lanza, Crosby, Maureen O’Hara, Jane Wyman and Lucille Ball. These periodicals average ex, with some less, some better. There also are about 100 magazine pages carrying articles, photos and ads with Gary Cooper, Stewart, Jane Fonda, Jane Russell, Fred Astaire, Nat King Cole, Jack Benny, Errol Flynn, Shirley Jones, Tom Jones, Humphrey Bogart, Jerry Lewis, Johnny Mack Brown and others.

Lot 175.  4 Rodeo Programs - 1 Roy Rogers Cover, 1 Gene Autry Cover. Forty-eight-page programs for the 1936 and 1937 annual October rodeo at Madison Square Garden in New York picture the top riders and ropers of the era. Both are vg-ex. The date is written on the 1937 program, which has an insert listing participants. Autry is on the cover of a 1940s program for his “Flying A Ranch Stampede.” The 16-page program offers features on Autry and rodeos. Rogers graces the cover of the program for the 1945 “World Championship Rodeo” at the Uline Arena in Washington, D.C. This rodeo is also identified as the “S. Q. Ranch Rodeo,” and the program lists Rogers as the “Rodeo Guest.” Vg. A program insert also promotes the Washington Lions of the Eastern Hockey League and pictures M. J. Uline, president of Uline Arena.

Lot 176.  1958 Kentucky Fair Program Picturing Country, Rock and Big Band Performers. What an impressive entertainment lineup! For fans of big band and other pre-rock n roll music, the fair presented the Mills Brothers, Vaughn Monroe, Arthur Godfrey and Bob Crosby. All four acts receive a full page in the 16-page program. For early rockers and rhythm & blue followers, there are the Poni Tails (full page), Clyde McPhatter, La Vern Baker and Danny and the Juniors. Country fans could hear June Carter, Don Gibson and Carl Smith. For good measure, the fair staff also enlisted Dagmar (full page) and Roy Rogers and Dale Evans (two pages!). Vg-ex with Roy and Dale, Crosby, Dagmar, the Poni Tails and Godfrey on the front cover, and Rogers on the back cover.

Lot 177.  Rare 1937 Cole Bros. Circus Program with Clyde Beatty on the Cover. The program is for a March 18-April 11 run at the New York Hippodrome. A wild animal tamer and trainer, Beatty was a major celebrity star of the 1930s-50s. He was best known for his “fighting act,” which was intended to demonstrate his courage and his control of ferocious animals. At times in his act, he mixed various wild beasts - leopards, pumas, hyenas, and as many as 40 tigers and lions of both sexes. His circus fame landed him starring roles in as many as 10 movies. Beatty toured with various circus, including Cole Bros.’ from 1935 through 1938. In 1945, he bought a circus. In 1958, he merged it with Cole Bros. to form the Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. Circus, billed as “The World’s Largest Circus Under the Big Top.” A drawing on the cover of this 1937 shows Beatty taming a lion. Inside, seven of the 32 pages picture Beatty or present information about him. The program is ex with several light or corner creases and a couple of minor, innocuous marks. This is truly a very rare program.

Lot 267.  Big 3 Auto Maker Executives Harlow H. Curtice, Henry Ford (II) and L. L. Colbert all personalized and signed the cover of this May 12, 1958 Time magazine that bears their images. Curtice, head of General Motors, was Time’s “Person of the Year” in 1955. He and Ford dated their autographs, both written in 1958. Colbert was Chrysler’s top official. Cover only. The signatures grade 9-10 of 10. Exceptional, desirable and rare piece! Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 396.  Elle (Macpherson) Autograph on the Cover of the 1988 SI Swimsuit Issue. Macpherson signed her first name in sharpie on the cover of the Feb. 15 issue. Inside is a personalized signature of Kathy (Ireland) on a two-page spread. Both signatures are 10. Nm issue. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 398.  News Stand Copy of the 1993 (Feb. 22) SI Swimsuit Issue Signed by Vendela (Kirsebom). Ex-m+ issue. Vendela’s signature, with “love,” a heart and Xs added, is a 10. Very collectible copy with no mailing label. Autenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 519.  Strands of President John F. Kennedy’s Hair in a display beautifully framed to 18” x 22”. The display features a photo of the 35th U.S. President, a facsimile autograph and two actual strands of his hair. An inset briefly describes his Presidency and 1963 assassination. A wood-grain black mat and light-gold frame surround these elements. The display comes with an LoA from Ryan T. Mack of Minneapolis. A photocopy shows the lock of hair that served as the source for the strands. According to the LoA, the lock was cut at Peter Lawford’s estate in July 1963. Subsequently, it was owned by University Archives of Connecticut. Dramatic!

Lot 812.  Eugene Ormandy, Helen Hayes Autographs. One of the great conductors, Ormandy signed a Philadelphia Orchestra program from the 1975-76 season. Large, bold signature, about 2” x 5” and perfect for matting and framing, rates a 10. Ormandy died in 1985. Hayes signed the back of a 1978 “Playbill” program for a tribute to her by the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America. The signature is a 9. Known as the “First Lady of the American Theatre,” Hayes died in 1993.
