By captivating audiences at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Korbut began to change of focus of gymnastics competition from elegance to acrobatics. Diminutive and athletic, she was first gymnast to perform a backward somersault on the balance beam. She won three gold medals and one silver at the 1972 Olympics and one gold and one silver at the 1976 competition. Photo is nm. Korbut signed only an “O.” for her first name.
