Ring Lardner and “Professor Happy” (Cliff Goldsmith) Books of Sports Humor.
Lot 843. Ring Lardner and “Professor Happy” (Cliff Goldsmith) Books of Sports Humor. Actually, early 20th century sports humor. The Lardner book, “Treat Em Rough: Letters from the Jack the Kaiser Killer,” is relatively common. Published in 1918, it features a series of letters home to “Friend Al” from Jack Keefe, who goes through military boot camp as World War I rages. The letters are filled with sports references, and many of the illustrations by Frank Crerie are sports-related. Vg. Far less common is Goldsmith’s “A Parody Sport Book” with illustrations by Clive Weed. Published in 1923 by the American Child Health Association, it is subtitled “Health Habits for Good Sports’.” Ty Cobb lends his name to an introduction to the book, which features a series of comical games, such as “Fruit Golf,” “Vegetable Ball” and “Evening Baseball.” Amid the nonsense are some health tips. Besides Cobb, the book pictures Johnny Weissmuller, Bo McMillin, Charles Paddock, the New York Yankees team (“They knowÉit takes sound teeth to chew up a World Pennant”) and Bobby Jones. First edition, no dj as issued, paper torn away from spine, ex-m contents. You won’t find quantity copies of this one on the Internet!
