Lot 404.  1927, 1934 Issues of Time with John McGraw, Lefty Gomez Covers. McGraw, manager of the New York Giants, is on the cover of the June 27, 1927, issue with Nicholas Butler, president of Columbia University. Both were celebrating their 25th year in the respective positions. Nice vg copy with a couple of edge chips and tears and splits along the spine. Gomez is on the cover of the July 9, 1934 issue. Vg. Gomez won pitching’s Triple Crown in 1934 with 26 wins, a 2.33 ERA and 158 strikeouts. Both McGraw and Gomez are in the Hall of Fame. Neither copy has a label.

Lot 405.  4 1920s-30s Issues of Time Featuring Football Covers. The earliest, from Sept. 23, 1929, has Chris Cagle on the cover. A three-time All-America selection at Army, Cagle was regarded as “the greatest football halfback since Red Grange.” Vg-ex. Harvard captain and quarterback William Barry Wood, Jr. is on the Nov. 23, 1931 cover. G-vg issue with a cover that has two small holes near the spine and otherwise is ex in appearance. The issue previews the Harvard-Yale game, which Yale won, 3-0, and ended Harvard’s run at a perfect season. The Nov. 13, 1933 issue has a general football action photo. Inside, an article discusses college football’s six unbeaten teams, and Willis Ward, an African-American player for Michigan, is pictured. Light center crease, nice ex appearance. Hall of Fame coach Wallace Wade is on the cover, in color, of the Oct. 25, 1937 issue. Ex. Wade coached Alabama and Duke. He is the first individual to participate in the Rose Bowl as both a player and coach. No labels on these copies.

Lot 406.  3 1930s Time Magazines with Tennis Covers Including Don Budge. All three players are in the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The Sept. 2, 1935 issue features Budge, an American who, in 1938, became the first player to win the Grand Slam of tennis. Covering along the spine is completely missing. Except for a few tiny indentations along the top edge, the cover itself is close to pristine. Frederick John Perry preceded Budge, adorning the cover of the Sept. 3, 1934 issue. Ex. Perry is generally considered to be Great Britain’s greatest tennis player. Gottfried von Cramm of Germany is on the Sept. 13, 1937 cover. Very close to ex. Graceful on the court, he was one of the most popular tennis players of his era. At the height of his career, he declined to support Hitler, and the Gestapo imprisoned him in 1938. He had a successful business career after World War II. All copies are without labels.

Lot 407.  Sept. 29, 1941 Issue of Time with Joe Louis on the Cover. Article inside speculates on possible retirement of the great heavyweight champion as he prepares to enter the Army and World War II. Great cover art. Vg+.

Lot 408.  31 Time Magazines Including 27 from WWII, 3 with “Man of the Year” Covers. Complete magazines range from June 19, 1939 through Dec. 17, 1945, plus one each from 1948, 1952, 1957 and 1960. “Man (now Person) of the Year” winners include second-time winner Joseph Stalin for 1942, George C. Marshall for 1943 and Dwight D. Eisenhower for 1944. Other notables on the covers include Lindbergh, President Hoover, MacArthur, Mountbatten, Anthony Eden, Stettinius, Ibn Saud, General Ridgway, Patton, President Truman, the Shah of Iran and President Johnson. There are four 1939 issues, one 1941, five 1942, three 1943, two 1944, and twelve 1945. Seventeen issues don’t have mailing labes. Nice collection of clean magazines averaging ex.

Lot 420.  3 1930s Newsweek Magazine Issues with Baseball Covers Including Hubbell. The Oct. 3, 1936 issue, when the magazine was News-Week, has Carl Hubbell on the cover to promote its World Series preview. No label, center advertising spread loose, vg-ex. The April 18, 1938 issue features Detroit’s Rudy York on the cover and compares him to Babe Ruth. Ex-m. In the June 19, 1939 issue marking baseball’s 100th anniversary, the magazine promotes the Abner Doubleday myth. Label, vg-ex, nice issue.
