Lot 418. Complete 1932 Mid-Week Pictorial in Three Hardbound Volumes. Published by The New York Times, the Pictorial captured the world in pictures, much as television does today. Generally, each issue contains 32 pages, primarily pictures with limited text. The pages were trimmed to 11 1/4” x 15”; this change has a very limited effect on a small number of photos and no effect on the text. The outer covers show some soiling. The pages inside are predominantly ex+ to ex-m. These volumes are loaded with photos of widely recognized figures from politics, aviation, sports and other fields - Wiley Post and Harold Gatty, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, Sonja Heine, President Hoover, Hack Wilson, President Hoover with Walter Johnson at the start of the 1932 baseball season, Georgia Coleman, Amelia Earhart (as the first woman to fly alone across the Atlantic), Gene Sarazen, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Helen Wills Moody, Babe Didrikson, Eddie Tolan and the Pictorial All-American football team, including Warren Heller, Harry Newman, Jack Manders, Joe Skladany, Tay Brown and Beatty Feathers. Events receiving attention are the Hoover vs. Roosevelt Presidential election, the Depression, Cox’s Army, Japan’s war on China, the Lindbergh kidnapping, the first ceremony at the new Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Coney Island fire, the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and the Yankees-Cubs World Series. The Feb. 20 issue is devoted to the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth.
