Lot 417. Near-Complete 1933 Mid-Week Pictorial in Three Hardbound Volumes. Missing the March 25 and April 15 issues. Published by The New York Times, the Pictorial captured the world in pictures, much as television does today. Generally, each issue contains 32 pages, primarily pictures with limited text. The pages were trimmed to 11” x 14”; this change has a very limited effect on a small number of photos and no effect on the text. The outer covers show some soiling. The pages inside are predominantly ex-m+. The greats of politics, the arts and sports are pictured - Amelia Earhart, former President Coolidge (19 pages upon his death), Sonja Heine, President Hoover, Babe Ruth, President Franklin Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Charles Lindbergh, Jack Dempsey, Princess Elizabeth, the National League All-Stars, Gen. Italo Balbo, Frederick J. Perry (U.S. Open Champion), President Roosevelt with Joe Cronin at the World Series, and football action: University of California, USC vs. St. Mary’s, Ohio State vs. Penn and Notre Dame vs. Army. Events covered include the Depression, the first inauguration of President Roosevelt, Japan’s invasion of China, the growth of Hitler’s power, the Chicago World’s Fair and the revolution in Cuba.
