Complete 1936 Mid-Week Pictorial in Three Hardbound Volumes.
Lot 416. Complete 1936 Mid-Week Pictorial in Three Hardbound Volumes. Published by The New York Times, the Pictorial captured the world in pictures, much as television does today. Generally, each issue contains 32 pages of primarily pictures with limited text. The margins were trimmed to fit a 9 ½” x 14” format; with only a few exceptions, this alteration does not affect the photos or text. The outer covers show some soiling. The pages inside are predominantly ex-m+. These volumes feature photos of President Roosevelt and world misleaders such as Hitler and Mussolini. The war in Spain is covered extensively. Various issues cover development of the Hindenburg, the dirigible that caught fire in 1937 while landing at Lakehurst, N.J. Pictorial sports coverage is always extensive, and these volumes cover, with photos, Jesse Owens’ success at the Summer Olympics in Berlin, Max Schmeling’s upset of Joe Louis and Walter Johnson attempting to show that George Washington could have thrown a coin across the Rappahannock River. There are photos of Lou Gehrig, Carl Hubbell and many other stars. These volumes also capture the transition of this publication from a true pictorial to a news magazine. Beginning with the March 10 issue, the weekly features color covers on heavier paper stock. At the same time, the volume of text increases, and the quality of the photos drops. With the Dec. 2 issue, the dimensions of the publication decrease.
