Mid-Week Pictorial Hardbound Volumes   4 Lots

Lot 416.  Complete 1936 Mid-Week Pictorial in Three Hardbound Volumes. Published by The New York Times, the Pictorial captured the world in pictures, much as television does today. Generally, each issue contains 32 pages of primarily pictures with limited text. The margins were trimmed to fit a 9 ½” x 14” format; with only a few exceptions, this alteration does not affect the photos or text. The outer covers show some soiling. The pages inside are predominantly ex-m+. These volumes feature photos of President Roosevelt and world misleaders such as Hitler and Mussolini. The war in Spain is covered extensively. Various issues cover development of the Hindenburg, the dirigible that caught fire in 1937 while landing at Lakehurst, N.J. Pictorial sports coverage is always extensive, and these volumes cover, with photos, Jesse Owens’ success at the Summer Olympics in Berlin, Max Schmeling’s upset of Joe Louis and Walter Johnson attempting to show that George Washington could have thrown a coin across the Rappahannock River. There are photos of Lou Gehrig, Carl Hubbell and many other stars. These volumes also capture the transition of this publication from a true pictorial to a news magazine. Beginning with the March 10 issue, the weekly features color covers on heavier paper stock. At the same time, the volume of text increases, and the quality of the photos drops. With the Dec. 2 issue, the dimensions of the publication decrease.
Winning Bid $102.

Lot 417.  Near-Complete 1933 Mid-Week Pictorial in Three Hardbound Volumes. Missing the March 25 and April 15 issues. Published by The New York Times, the Pictorial captured the world in pictures, much as television does today. Generally, each issue contains 32 pages, primarily pictures with limited text. The pages were trimmed to 11” x 14”; this change has a very limited effect on a small number of photos and no effect on the text. The outer covers show some soiling. The pages inside are predominantly ex-m+. The greats of politics, the arts and sports are pictured - Amelia Earhart, former President Coolidge (19 pages upon his death), Sonja Heine, President Hoover, Babe Ruth, President Franklin Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Charles Lindbergh, Jack Dempsey, Princess Elizabeth, the National League All-Stars, Gen. Italo Balbo, Frederick J. Perry (U.S. Open Champion), President Roosevelt with Joe Cronin at the World Series, and football action: University of California, USC vs. St. Mary’s, Ohio State vs. Penn and Notre Dame vs. Army. Events covered include the Depression, the first inauguration of President Roosevelt, Japan’s invasion of China, the growth of Hitler’s power, the Chicago World’s Fair and the revolution in Cuba.
Winning Bid $75.

Lot 418.  Complete 1932 Mid-Week Pictorial in Three Hardbound Volumes. Published by The New York Times, the Pictorial captured the world in pictures, much as television does today. Generally, each issue contains 32 pages, primarily pictures with limited text. The pages were trimmed to 11 1/4” x 15”; this change has a very limited effect on a small number of photos and no effect on the text. The outer covers show some soiling. These volumes are loaded with photos of widely recognized figures from politics, aviation, sports and other fields - Wiley Post and Harold Gatty, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, Sonja Heine, President Hoover, Hack Wilson, President Hoover with Walter Johnson at the start of the 1932 baseball season, Georgia Coleman, Amelia Earhart (as the first woman to fly alone across the Atlantic), Gene Sarazen, Franklin D.
