Growing up poor in Washington state, Cox starred in basketball, football and track at Walla Walla High School. After two years at the University of Washington, he transferred to Minnesota, where he led the Golden Gophers to a 6-1-2 record in 1956. His Minnesota coach, Hall of Fame member Murray Warmath, said, “I never had anybody who wanted to win more than he did.” He played professionally in the CFL and for the Boston Patriots.
