Lot 218. 1930s-40s Chicago Cubs Team Issues. 1931: These eight pictures average vg with qualifiers noted. Baecht, Bell with writing on blank back, Blair with minor back damage, Blake, Sweetland, Dan Taylor with pin hole and wob, Zack Taylor, Teachout. 1932: Nine photos, Bush, English, Grimm, Hemsley, Herman, Malone, Root, Stephenson and Wrigley. The Wrigley photo has a 1/8” edge tear and otherwise is vg+. The others are vg+ to ex with light corner wear and a very light corner or edge crease. Nice group. For the rest of these team issues, we have done our best to assign the correct date. Nevertheless, in the absence of a master set, they are confusing, and existing checklists are inconsistent. They may not be returned because of dates incorrectly assigned. 1939: These three are on paper with a rough surface. Passeau ex, Dizzy Dean, two small surface indentations, otherwise ex+; Hack vg. 1939 or 1940: Smooth paper. Page vg+, Root vg, Rip Russell (Centennial patch on sleeve) vg-ex. 1942: Seventeen photos. Bithorn, Cavaretta (pin hole), Dallassandro, Erickson, Hack (pin hole), Lee, Mooty, Myers (pin hole), Novikoff, Olsen, Passeau (pin holes), Pressnell, Scheffing (pin hole), Schmitz (two small areas of paper loss on front), Stringer, Sturgeon vg, Cuyler-Wilson-Spalding (all three on one photo). These team issues range from vg+ to vg+ to ex and average vg-ex. They generally have small or light creases in the corners. Qualifiers are noted. 1944: Eighteen photos, or two-thirds of the set. Becker, Burrows, Cavaretta, Derringer*, Easterwood, Fleming, Jimmie Foxx* (two 1/8” edge tears), Goodman*, Holm, Johnson* g-vg, Mann*, Miklos, Sauer, Schuster*, Stanky, Vandenberg, Wyse*, York*. Vg+ to vg+ to ex group averaging vg-ex. The asterisk(*) indicates that “Cubs” is neatly written on the back; some other teams are listed too. Other qualifiers are noted.
