6 Photos Pertaining to Chicago’s Andy Frain, “Usher King of the World.”

Lot 848. 6 Photos Pertaining to Chicago’s Andy Frain, “Usher King of the World.” From little beginnings, Frain grew a national empire that provided ushers for the Kentucky Derby, airlines and political events. At the age of 12, Frain was renting seat cushions to White Sox fans at Comiskey Park. At the age of only 20 in 1924, he used his ushers to solve the Chicago’s hockey team’s problem with gate crashers. William Wrigley, Jr., loaned Frain $5,000 to buy uniforms for his ushers at Wrigley Field. At its peak, his usher service had offices in 26 cities. In a 5” x 6 ½” photo, Frain is shown as he appeared in 1938. The other photos are at least 8” x 9”. One shows Frain’s wife, he was called as a witness in a 1942 court case. His son appears in a 1964 photo, and his son’s wife, in a 1957 sepia print. In a 1960 photo, Frain receives an award. Frain is pictured also at a funeral mass for his wife, who was killed in a commercial airline crash. Chicago Mayor Daley can be seen in this photo. Frain passed away in 1964. His company continued in various forms into the mid-1990s. Some photos are vg, and others are vg-ex. One is g-vg with an edge tear and surface cracks.
