1972 TCMA “The 1930’s” Set of 504.
Lot 441. 1972 TCMA “The 1930’s” Set of 504. One of TCMA’s earliest and most interesting offerings, this set consists of b&w photos of 1930s baseball players. The backs list the players’ name and team(s). The greats are here - Gehrig, Foxx, DiMaggio, and so are the obscure. TCMA issued the set in series, and the cards from different series vary in size. In addition, cards 409-456 are printed in blue. TCMA reportedly made only 1,000 of these sets. About one-fourth of the cards have stains on the back. The fronts are nm-m. Inexplicably, the Beckett Almanac lists this set as complete at 120 with a value of $75. It actually has 504 cards, as confirmed by the checklist in the Standard Catalog, which prices the set at $400. To make things interesting, we’ll start the bidding at
Winning Bid $652.
